the z-man played in extended spring game today, going 0-for-3 with a walk and played 3 innings @ 3B with nothing hit. he'll get tomorrow off and play again friday. maybe sometime early next week he'll go on a rehab assignment.

According to the Pythagorean W-L record, the Nats have been very unlucky in the win/loss department.
The Nats would be only 3 games under .500 with a record of 26-29.

Yes, except Riggleman is one of the all-time worst managers relative to his team's Pythag. You can book it that his team will finish 3 or so games worse than his pythag every year. That he's piled up his 3 games this fast is the only surprise.

You are right, the Nats finished 3 games worse than their Pythagorean w/l last season.
This is kind of shocking, but the Nats finished 7 wins behind their Pythagorean prediction in 2009.

This is a small sample size, but it is still interesting to note:

In 2005 under Frank Robinson, the team finished 4 wins ahead of their prediction
In 2006 still under Frank Robinson, the team finished 1 win behind
In 2007 under Manny Acta, the team finished 3 wins ahead
In 2008 under Manny Acta, the team finished 3 wins behind

It's not thaat interesting. Most managers' records end right around the Pythagoreans of their teams over enough time. Really, other than Riggleman, I don't think there's anyone who's managed for as long as he has with a significantly different Pythag from his W/L record. Of course, it may just be due to random chance with Riggs.

Play for one run, lose by one run.

He has the Nats bunt way too much to optimize run production. Last year steals (or caught stealing, actually) were a major run killer.
