Jon Heyman at SI.com says that because we have "stayed afloat" without RZ or SS, Jim Riggleman deserves to be signed to a long-term deal.

Ever since I saw the news that Bruce Bochy named Riggleman to his staff gor the AS game I have been wondering something. Bruce Bochy knows a lot more than me about managing a baseball team. I think that is an understatement and likely goes without saying, but if a guy like Bochy thinks Riggleman is good at his job then who is more likely to be wrong? Me or Bruce Bochy. Obviously the answer is me. So, the only thing I can really do is try and watch Jim Riggleman with less biased eyes and not look for and pick at every little detail that confirms my bias.

Does anyone? I think the highest prediction was for 81 wins and that isn't winning that is .500.

Riggleman has done things I don't agree with at times but I don't think I've ever seriously called for his head or blamed our losing ways on him.  That would be silly.  I would like to see a little more fire from him occasionally, but as others have pointed out, that doesn't necessarily accomplish anything except to make us, the fans, feel better (which also doesn't win games).  Some people don't like that he doesn't call players (or the team as a whole) out for bad performances, but honestly I don't see how that's going to help anything either.

When Jim Leyland or Ozzie Guillen do call people out they never do it by name to the media. It is the worst thing a manager can do. Managers need to stick up for their players in public and critize them if they need it privately to their face. Riggleman is good at all the personality managing. My problem with him is doing stuff like using Morse in a contact situation to drive in a run that Desmond bunted over when Desmond had been the hotter hitter and Morse is a strike out threat at the plate. Also hitting and running with Ramos as the runner. Ramos is fast for a catcher but that is like being smart for a Phillies fan. He has ideas that can be good but then he implements those ideas when he shouldn't. If you look at the two things I mentioned in one of those games the Nats won and the move didn't matter and in the other they got shutout by Cliff Lee and the move likely didn't matter. Riggleman will keep the players happy and I think they play hard for him and want to please him, which is ultimately more important than in game managing. Bruce Bochy is a guy I respect and if he believes something I am going to listen.

Re: Bruce Bochy: last time I listened to Charlie and Dave, they interviewed Riggleman and he sucked up to Bochy big time, stuff like "If anyone other than me is going to win championships, I want it to be Bruce Bochy. He's the best guy who has ever walked the earth. He cures lepers."

Well, he said one of those things anyway.

Unfortunately you have a very good point - which is very logical and which I agree with - so for now I will zip my mouth about Riggleman and his strategy, and see what happens......

To be fair, have you ever heard other managers trash a losing manager, unless he's a complete dick?

Now, that's good comedy there. Well done.

It's really hard to knock this team for how it has played without Zim, and now Pudge is even contributing.

honestly, he might be our most clutch hitter so far this season.  and he can still catch a bit.

This; though the clutch hitting bar is set very low. Probably set by Jason Marquis.

Gotta think it's the fact that he's a backup now.

I wouldn't doubt it.  One reason why I'm ok with him taking the back-up job there the next couple of years as he chases 3000.

It would take at least two more seasons as a backup (and maybe even as a starter :?).

I know, but if he's the back up, I have no problem with that.

As far as the Bochy logic goes, most Giants fans I know seem to think he's a dumb manager who completely lucked into last year's WS victory.  For what it's worth.

Is there a fan base that doesn't think their manager is dumb?
