I don't understand this board... it's almost as if you all go out of your way to piss each other, as evidenced by this thread.  So much goading and provocation.  After all the doom and gloom here over the past few months, this should at least be a light at the end of the tunnel, no?  I mean, how many of you were expecting this, really?

And Chief, I know you think that all internet boards are like this, but I'm a pretty active member of a couple other, unrelated communities, and nowhere is the spite and vitriol so pronounced.  The signal to noise ratio here is whack.

You're yelling too. If someone says something that you don't like, ignore it. We're talking about freaking baseball on the freaking Internet. Nothing to get upset about.

I think the core user group gets along.  We fight and nag and moan at each other, but in general, I don't think there are many posters that really hate each other.  I don't know, it's like a family fighting.  But we all love each other :group hug emote:

 I like it here.

a couple.

and chemist, no offense, but this is the nats we're talking about.  we've been losers for years.  of course there are some negativity issues here.  you can't blame anyone.  (disclaimer: this is coming from a poster who used to be more optimistic than debbi taylor.)

I guess I'm just seeing a lot of people go out of their way to prove that something someone said contradicting something they said a while ago in another thread about something else blah blah blah, but anyways.  Back to the topic at hand--

Werth is a National.  When I saw it, I didn't believe it.  This is great.

I was at the bar working when the werth signing flashed on the espn bottom line thingy.

and I was glued to the tv until it came back on cause I thought I was hallucinating.

then after the second time, i waited and watched again just to be sure I saw it right.

I think this board is freaking awesome with letting people have a throwdown, get their crap out of the way, and then reaching some sort of civil conclusion to things.

I go to another board where it's like North Korea, and there's a lot of genuinely nasty in-fighting.

It's better if you just let it out.

All this worrying and doom and gloom predictions over Werth's later years seem pointless. I'm in a now mode so I'm joining in the celebration of taking away one of the Phillies best players and adding him to the Nats roster. Too bad so many are so negative about this. At this time why worry about what will happen in 2016 and 2017? I can't believe some are already predicting he will be washed up by then. I think there is a good chance he will still contribute to the team in his later years. And if his production does go a little downhill, so what. It's the cost of doing business. I think there is an excellent chance he gives us at least 5 years of outstanding production. It's worth the risk. And if the Nats make a World Series appearance in the near future it will be even better.

Maybe Werth and Cliff Lee developed a great relationship when Lee was on the Phillies so it will sway him to come here.

I'm definitely pleased with this deal for the next four to five years. But something I find interesting, reading the comments on the Fangraphs article... It looks like 90%+ are extremely negative on the entirety of the deal. Overpaying, too many years, and most interestingly something I haven't seen in this thread, that we signed Werth to a huge contract when we have little to no chance of competing. Most of the comments over there, nearly 80 thus far, seem to think that since we won't have the pieces together until 2012, and it'll be until 2013 until they hit their stride, that the deal makes no sense.

My point is, am I the only one that finds it surprising the non-DC reaction to this is overwhelmingly, nearly universally, negative? You really have to look to find any positive opinions on this deal outside of Nats fans. I certainly don't get it, I'm thrilled and think it makes perfect sense for the next five seasons. After that, no.

The team won't compete next year. In 2012, they have a shot to compete, but I think the Braves are the favorites. After that, the team should be competitive with the right moves. My concern is the team wasting 1 or 2 of Werth's few prime years on a loser. Then by the time they compete, he is on the downside. That was also my concern with the Texiera deal. The team would have wasted 2 years of his prime (In hindsight it looks like it would be 3-4 years) which meant the team would have 6 years 150 million committed to a 31 year old 1B who is going to decline and burden a potential winner.

Think of Werth as a loss leader.

@Linty and others.

I think the most likely scenario is that when Werth is 37, we will be merely overpaying for an Ibanez/Konerko type. There are a lot worse things in the world, like, say, 37-year-old David Ortiz. Or Carlos Lee, who is a tub of lard.
