Now we can move on to LAI

Seven years seriously, how freaking stupid are they?

Awesome news.  But the seven years thing will come back to bite us.

He's 31. It's not the end of the world.

$126m / 7 yr, or $18m AAV.  For that to be anywhere close to a good deal for us, even taking into account payroll inflation, he would have to put up an average of 3 to 4 WAR per year, for seven years.  That's insanely optimistic, in "not going to happen" territory.  History is littered of examples of clubs who made deals like this to players on the wrong side of thirty and watched their money disappear.

But right now, I'm too happy to care.  We'll cross that bridge when we come to it.  The point is that we've never even been in the position before to worry about a long-term contract with a good player not panning out.

I wonder how much of this was to apease fans angered by Dunn leaving. I also wonder if it was why Peralta was non-tendered to make room for Werth and the first baseman.

I do think the contract is ridiculous, but I still like the signing.

I'm sure they've been working on this for a while.

Nice!  I've always wanted to be a Werth fan.  His sister is a standout volleyball player here at Nebraska, now I can root for the whole family!  Welcome to DC, Jayson!

I've been rallying behind this team is more stupid than anything. This proves it. I'm thrilled to get Werth. Do any of us really want to see him at 38? Seriously? I mean WTF? How can we go from the world is ending to getting someone we never even had a chance at, possibly superior to Dunn in a lot of ways, and still be pissed off? And legitimately pissed off? For the next four or five years, this is an amazing move. I'm scared to death come 2016. Then again, we were all whining 100+ losses next year without Dunn, and thats half a decade away, so who are we to complain. But why no Dunn four years, but Werth is good until he's almost 40?!?

LAI.

What a terrible deal.

The Nats are not better at all. They just filled Dunn's whole with another bat.

Add someone else, and then I'll be impressed.

Well I for one really like this, even though Werth seems to be a bit of a sourpuss when I've seen him interviewed :)

:lmao: WTF???

That's totally awesome!

But why couldn't they sign Dunn at the same time?  Imagine Z/Dunn/Werth/Hammer in the middle of the order.  Bleh, whatever, still kick-ass news.

He's a pretty good outfielder, no?

Unless they put Morse at 1B you can add Pena's production as well.

for starters, great move for the nats.  i'm sorry but there's no way around it.  the guy has been a stud for years and he should continue to deliver.  when the nats are ready to compete you have him, bryce, and whatever CF you want.  that is awesome.

secondly, this is a solid move to show the fan base, okay we are not afraid to spend.  should we all sit back and resolve the lerners for being the cheapest people on the planet since they took over?  no not at all.  but this is a step in the right direction.

jayson werth fills an absolute major need.  not just for other free agents on the landscape, but for our line-up and OF.

let's hope the lerners can build on this and move forward.  i would love to stop talking about LAC vs. LANC vs. LAINC vs. PETA ... and instead ... i would love to one day be able to argue what our seeding will be in the postseason.

I think this is more "RIS" (Rizzo Is Stupid)

Vindication for LANC, namely PANats

Werth is a better all-around player than Dunn. Just not as much of a power threat.

Dunn was a 3.9 WAR player and Werth was a 5.0 WAR player. Plus both Bernadina and Morse are negative UZR in right.

Exactly.  Dunn is a DH, I know no one here wants to hear it but it's true.  Werth has value in the field and at the plate.

This move sucks.

It totally sucks. Werth maybe fills Dunn's role from last year for a crap load lot more money. If they had re-signed Dunn and ADDED Werth I'd be impressed. As of now, it's nothing more than playing a shell game on the fans.

This is a terrible deal, that's going to kill the Nats for years to come.
