I remember joking during the season that it would be cool if we used the extra money from Phillies fans to buy Werth, and it is.

The only way this is a bad signing is if it impacts other decisions this club makes financially that will affect us keeping or getting new players. Is it an overpayment? Ya, probably by about 3m, or about 4m/yr if you take in the length of the contract. Adding the extra 2 years should have made us lower the yearly pay, considering other offers in the 4-5 year range are surfacing shows that we clearly had the longest offer in ADDITION to the highest yearly salary.
Also, I've mentioned it before, how is his D in the outfield going to be when he's 36-38? There's a reason why most teams (everyone but us) didn't want to go to 7 years. Also, if you're able to sign a Lance Berkman who's 34 and is probably going to take a corner OF spot at 1 yr 8m, it's not hard to imagine we could have filled a corner outfield spot with good production for 50% less than what Werth will be making the last 3 years of his contract.

All of the negative and waste of money becomes a mute point if the Lerner's don't mind overpaying everyone, from getting us a #1 starting pitcher and another bigger hitter. Because in the end, it's not our money, so who cares if they overpay by 5m or by 20m?

Lerner's blog, BTW. Says "Phase One" is over now that we have replenished our farm system, although we will continue to do that.

" Phase One is actually an on-going phase, but we are confident enough about where we stand in our system to move on."

Thank god, because there is still a lot more work to do in the farm.

I know, but I think going to a place in DC that represents their culture and hardworking, successful members of the culture is a tribute to them, as long as you keep them in mind.

Ok, it's taken me ALL day to go through each post -- I did not want to repeat anything anyone has said, but I'm probably going to anyway. And, as much as we've argued in the past, I find myself agreeing with Hammonds more and more...that the Lerners are NOT cheap and quite astute owners...yay Lerners! ;)

I really agree with the common sentiment of the board; massive over-pay, but, really, who cares. This HAD to be done. My initial response to the e-mail was holy crap...why didn't they just keep Dunn?? However, in reading more and taking a look at Rizzo's idea for the team, Werth brings 2 things to the table Dunn doesn't: Speed and defense. Dunn, as much as I love the guy, is just raw power, not much else. Werth's walks and OBP will be much more beneficial now. And Dunn certainly doesn't have that sweet-arsed beard! As for the last years of the deal...worry about that in 3-4 years.

And, as HN said, they must continue. Bring in LaRoache rather than Pena. See if they can swing a pennies-on-the-dollar trade for Prince Fielder. Get a starter. Make a trade if necessary. Keep building. I am excited to be a Nats fan again!

Not a big fan of the sweater over the polo.  I'm more of a sweater over the button down with the sleeves rolled up kind of guy.

Agreed. I feel like sweater over the polo looks kind of weird.

I can't be the only one that thinks Rizzo is professionally dressed.

Mike seems like the type of guy that doesn't get out much. I like that quality in a GM.

I'm not saying it's unprofessional, just that, personally, I'd go a different route.

Gonna be changing the name to "werthsnats" anytime soon?

But just remember that with a name like "werth" you can't be "cheap."

No he looks fine, but like DPM I'd give a different fashion recommendation.

If Dmitri Young's smile alone is worth wins, how does Jayson Werth's beard affect his WARP?

I like his beard. We need more awesome beards on the team.
