When's the presser? I want to see him in a Nats uniform.

Not for at least a week.

Have Winter Meetings to go through, first.

Stan was the cancer for the team. That is abundantly clear. Screw him. Rizzo may be a mad genius, we need to wait and see.

Now there's a really good player for my kid to root for that's here for the long haul, and that means something to me. Extend Zim and Strasburg when you get the chance, and Ted Lerner will be the hero of DC.

LO freakIN L!

Ted Lerner is still a cheap SOB until he starts making more moves than this.  Yeah, today, was a good day to be a Nats fan, but we need A LOT MORE WORK BEFORE WE CAN START HAILING MR. CHEAPO AS A WONDERFUL DC FIGURE.

QFT

Would people rather the team sit idly on their thumbs and go with Bernadina/Morgan in RF/CF and Mike Morse at 1B?

shut up hypocrite.

halfway through the first spring training intersquad game of the season you'll be calling Werth a crappy piece of crap punk nag motherfreaker just because he hit a double instead of a home run.

Everything on my mind about this deal has pretty much been pointed out by others here.  I know we're not supposed to think years down the line with ppl in the minor leagues, but how will this affect Bryce Harper if and when he makes his Nats debut?  I thought they were grooming him for RF.

easy. Werth moves to left, Willingham moves to another team at the 2011 trade deadline.

BTW, I was worried about years 5-7 too, but JCA brought up an excellent point, up-thread.

Werth could always move to 1B if his outfield defense declines too much.  He's a very athletic player.

It really doesn't matter, though.  The Nats HAD to overpay to get him.

again love the werth signing, but u telling me we couldn't use:
3) Zimmerman, 4) Dunn, 5) Werth, 6) Willingham?!?!  damn that would've been sweeeeeeeeeet.

anywho still for at least sunday/monday we should all celebrate.  hopefully this is the start to a busy and productive offseason for the nats.

You're right, sorry, completely forgot that Willingham is a FA after 2011.

It's a good start though.  They are supposedly still looking to make another splash in FA.  We'll get a 1B as well.  Add in a trade for a top starting P, and I'd be pretty happy.

Would it have been nice to keep Dunn?  Hell yes, I'm still bummed to see him go.  But I'm feeling much better about our chances to have a respectable team next year than I was.

Plus, it's the offseason.  What else are we going to do except bicker about everything :P .  4 months till we get close to some baseball again.

the Lerners could sign werth, dunn, lee, pavano, crawford to 100m contracts, trade for grienke, shields, fielder, and garza, and you would STILL BE HERE WHINING ABOUT THEM.

You didn't read my post. Read it again.

i did.  you continue to rip on stan for reasons unknown.  he's not the one spending money or scouting players.  yeah the courting phillies fans thing was awful, we all know that ... but other than that he is a well respected baseball person.  not baseball mind, but baseball person.

and we're not going to win with just strasburg / zimmerman / werth.  so - as i said - lerner will have some ways to go before being "the hero of DC".

for starters, great move for the nats.  i'm sorry but there's no way around it.  the guy has been a stud for years and he should continue to deliver.  when the nats are ready to compete you have him, bryce, and whatever CF you want.  that is awesome.

secondly, this is a solid move to show the fan base, okay we are not afraid to spend.  should we all sit back and resolve the lerners for being the cheapest people on the planet since they took over?  no not at all.  but this is a step in the right direction.

jayson werth fills an absolute major need.  not just for other free agents on the landscape, but for our line-up and OF.

let's hope the lerners can build on this and move forward.  i would love to stop talking about LAC vs. LANC vs. LAINC vs. PETA ... and instead ... i would love to one day be able to argue what our seeding will be in the postseason.

there you go jmad
