I'd prefer Alberto. Mostly because he's cheaper.

I want Youk at 1B in DC.

that might happen the next time we play Boston assuming Adrian is hurt.  Otherwise I wouldn't get to excited about it happening any time soon.

How about signing the best one available, without giving any players up in the process, ie NO TRADE.   After all, they are trying to replace someone who hit 38 homeruns last year.

...how many other teams ever have to replace a player who hit 38 homeruns in the previous season, without the player's retirement or death?

If you unfocus on homers and just say impact players I would say 3-4 teams on average an off-season have to replace a player like that. This off-season Texas, Philadelphia, Boston, Washington, San Diego, Kansas City, and Tampa Bay all had to replace impact players. Texas, San Diego, Kansas City, and Tampa have done less than Washington to replace those they lost.

2001 Oakland A's lost Jason Giambi. The 2002 Oakland A's won 103 games.

1999 Seattle Mariners lost Jr. The 2000 Seattle Mariners won 91 games.

I got bored. There could be more.

I'd rather focus on homeruns. And even if we expand it, San Diego and Kansas City, traded their players away, not let them walk and Tampa has stated that they are trimming payroll so they actually have an excuse.  If the Lerners had stated they were planning on cutting payroll   they'd have an excuse.

The closest comparison would be Texas and they didn't lose 93 games.  They're lost player is being taken away from a better team.

I don't want you to misunderstand me, I wanted Dunn to be resigned. But the Nats had a problem getting the big guy to cross home. If Dunn wasn't driving himself in, basically he was SOL. Last season he batted third 22 times, Ryan Zimmerman didn't drive him in once. Never. Willingham only had 6 RBI's where it runner was Dunn. The guy is slow. For all of his OBP, it's too damn hard to drive him in. This isn't just the Nats, it was happening before he got here. I would love to have Dunn on the team, but he isn't irreplaceable.

Boston and Philadelphia did something to replace the impact players they lost. KC, TB and SD are small markets. Let's face it, even though the Nats are not in a small market, the Lerners are running the team like a small market team and are hoping to find lightning in a cheap bottle like TB and SD did.

Are you saying the difference in speed between Dunn and whoever plays first for us this year is going to make up for the loss in power?  That's very unlikely to be the case, if you are.

And remember, the impact of his power was diminished because, so often, when he went deep, he was the only player on base.  A staggeringly high percent of his homeruns were solos.

The question is, would you rather face NL East pitchers or AL East pitchers?

NL East:                 AL East:
Roy Halladay          CC Sabathia
Cliff Lee                 Phil Hughes
Roy Oswalt             Ricky Romero
Cole Hamels           Brendan Morrow
Josh Johnson          Josh Beckett
Ricky Nolasco         Jon Lester
Tim Hudson            David Price
Tommy Hanson       Jeremy Hellickson
Johan Santana        James Shields

If that's true, Rizzo needs to decide and sign one already.

LOL.  Then trade one of them for a king's ransom.  Plus a controlling stake in MASN.

http://www.masnsports.com/phil_wood/2010/12/post-christmas-update.html

Phil Wood with several bits of information in his latest.

Says we talked with the Dodgers about Loney and would have sent them a catcher for him.

Also says that 1B situation should be resolved this week and gives the impression that we're going to come away with Lee.

I'm pasting the most interesting paragraph below.  Note the tidbits on Werth and Norris.  Really interesting, if true.

From Wood:
Lee's willingness to sign a contract for just a single season makes him all the more attractive to the Nationals, who feel they have other first base options beyond 2011. No one should be terribly surprised to see Jayson Werth move to first base in 2012, with Bryce Harper taking over in right field. Fans should also look for Derek Norris to get playing time in the outfield this year as well as behind the plate. Scouts think his bat will play in the major leagues, and feel he can transition to left field without much problem.

Is he smoking the ganja? Wouldn't you rather have Werth and Harper in the outfield and Norris at 1b?
