Yeah - that article says they're 'closing in on signing LaRoche.'  Not sure how to interpret that, but I guess it's one step closer to actually getting him after making the offer.

I don't understand a world in which Pena gets 1/10 and LaRoche gets 3/16.  Is Pena that good defensively?  Is he that swell of a guy?

The Orioles, shockingly being wise, don't want to wait around and be one of the teams trying to sign the last good player available.

A few extra million dollars, in exchange for certainty, is a small price to pay.  Too bad Rizzo and the Lerners don't think this way.

Fukudome still strikes me as a good option in LF.  Bernie as the 4th OF.

Don't give them any ideas regarding Milledge. Scarily, I could see it happening, signing him to a minor league deal. That's my worst nightmare... The ultimate CF platoon of Coladar's nightmares: Milledge and Morgan!!!

I'll be concerned if it's just Bernie in LF.  They need another established OF if they're going to have Morse share time at 1B.  Not sure if Podsednik is the greatest fit.  Just looking at his stats, it looks like he and Nyjer could possibly combine for all 27 during a game just by getting thrown out on the basepaths.

Still, he would be better than just Bernadina, though.  Bernie hasn't shown me enough to just hand over the position to him and him alone.

Right now, I am frustrated. Im not going to rip into the team for the way they've handled things, but I definitely question them. There is no reason to not have a deal done with a first baseman. LaRoche and Lee are clearly the top two, and we've been linked to both, to varying levels. We should know what it's going to take and we should have made our best offer. I know the player has to commit, but if we make the offer, they'll jump. I know LaRoche wants a 3 year deal, and I don't see the problem in it if the money is right. I don't have a problem with 3/20. that's solid value IMO. We pretty much know what he's going to do, and it's a movable contract if we find a long term replacement. Or, if we want the one year deal, go get Lee for 7/8. It's not rushing into a deal when it takes three weeks to figure it out. We need one of these two to improve the ball club. Last year, we had two legit sluggers. This year we have two legit sluggers. Werth only makes sense if you add to him ... Go get one of these two, and get it done. Time to know what we got, and let some of the arms that may still be considering us know what they got behind them. Getting this done atl east gives us the flexibility to focus more on a Greinke or Garza deal.

There are SIX teams in on these guys. Not two, SIX. That complicates matters.

I can't preach patience enough on this board, especially as far as this first base situation goes.

If LaRoche signs with Baltimore and Lee signs with San Diego, it won't be the end of the world.  There are some interesting names out there that could be good values.  I've brought up Brad Hawpe in this thread, and I still think a platoon with Morse and Hawpe is our best option.  Nick Johnson is another name to keep in mind.  We know what he can provide if he can stay healthy.  He's an on-base machine who kills righties, with the potential for power.  Low risk, high reward.

I agree that it's not the end of the world if we get neither.  Branyan is still out there, too.

The problem with these options is that they are very risky and if the dumpster diving is our plan and it fails were in big trouble. lee and laroche are at least good bets to play well. Hawpe, who knows? Nick? Its more likely hell get hurt than stay healthy.

I didnt say there were only two teams pursuing them. I just said they are the top two guys out there.

But, we can get a deal done now. We can offer the money, and have the spot in the middle of the lineup. It's time to get the deal done.

Ive preached patience, but this is one where we've played out the situation. We know what it's going to take to get a deal done. Get it done.

Certainly, someonel like Hawpe could provide an impact. Definitely not the 'guaranteed' one like these two would provide. We're not talking 7 years here. It's no more than 3 likely, and that's only in LaRoche's case. Let's get one in here, and start to get our lineup i position for next year.

IF Rizzo is so darn high on Bernie, then bring in Hawpe and platoon him with Morse at first.  End the drama.

well therein lies the problem.  nobody should be high on bernie.

sign derrek lee for first.  bring in hawpe to spell 1B/LF/RF.

that way when werth moves to CF for certain games, you have options of bernadina/morse/hawpe around him.

at this point, i'll be content with an offseason of: Werth, front of the line SP, 1B and Hawpe.

If Rizzo brings in Hawpe, then why wouldn't he resign Dunn. Let's face it Hawpe isn't exactly Torii Hunter out there.

Because LAC.  Just a guess, but I figure the Nats could pick up Hawpe for < 3 years and < $12MM, the team's supposed offer for Dunn.  Probably 1 year, $6MM.
