why Lee over Laroche?

Higher OBP, less Ks, is not asking for 3 years, hits RH pitching.

thats the most important reason in my opinion.

Bringing in Hawpe makes a LOT of sense for a lot of reasons.  He fills multiple needs for us, as he can play first, he can play left, he hits for power, and he hits left handed.

Hawpe can't field.

I doubt Rizzo wants that.

Again I would love to add hawpe, but as a bench player.  Lee/laroche should be our target.

This is true, but I hope Rizzo could look past that for someone who hits like Hawpe and would only be here for one season

Maybe McNabb could play 1B for the Nats. He is going to need a job soon.

He'd yawn during rallies, and half to be lifted late for some AAAA backup.

[edit - "half to be lifted?"  the turtle must be rolling in his shell over that one.  S/b "have to be lifted"]

Would you give a crap about the game if you got benched before it in favor of Rex Grossman?

Somewhere around the 3rd or 4th TD I'd probably wake up.

He knows he's done in D.C, and after everything that Shanahan put him through, he was probably rooting for Dallas.  But I suppose we should stay on topic...

I was doing some rolling, till I saw the edit.

We've also been experiencing a run of "loosing" lately.

http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/12/20/the-orioles-offer-to-adam-laroche-is-richer-than-first-reported/

O's offer is supposedly 3 yrs and 21 million to LaRoche.

This is looking like the Jason Bay thing last year where only one team wants a guy and is willing to pay the market rate but he wants no part of the team.  It made me happy that it was teh Mets last year and it makes me happy that it's the O's this year.

But it doesn't really look like Derrek Lee wants to play here either.  :(

i don't see that at all?  he's even stated through his agent he wouldn't mind playing here and he's feeling great these days as compared to last season.

Hey I'll be thrilled to get him at this point.

But Lee's an accomplished player.  He had a taste of winning last year, and he's made a ton of money already.  I don't know what I wouldn't just sign on with a contender if I'm him.  Even if it means taking less money.  He'll be what, 36 after 2011?  Is he hoping to do a one year contract and parlay that into a multi-year deal at 36?

But I'm hoping we get him.

Let's take a look at the "contenders".  Which ones need a 1B?

AL East:
NYY - Texiera, Berkman, NJohnson
Bos - Gonzalez, Youkilis
TB - ??? Johnson, perhaps

AL Central:
Detroit - Cabrera
CWS - Konerko, Dunn
Minnesota - Morneau

AL West:
Texas: Moreland
Anaheim: Morales
Oakland: Barton

NL East:
Philadelphia - Howard
Atlanta - Freeman (they seem to like the kid there)

NL Central:
St. Louis - Pooholes
Milwaukee - Fielder
Cincy - Votto

NL West:
San Fran - Huff
LA - Loney
Colorado - Helton

There aren't a lot of "contenders" that need a 1B.  he can hold out for a bench spot perhaps, but if he wants to play, which I think he does, I don't see a lot of opportunities on a contender out there for him.

What contender is out there that doesn't have a plan at 1B?

Execs say DLee looking for 8M-10M. Makes sense: Berkman got 8, Pena 10. Number prob high for #Padres, but not necessarily #Nationals. #MLB

give him a 1 year deal with option for 2nd?

or would 2 years even be a decent idea?  (year 1 - $8.5 mil, year 2 - $9 mil)

why not 2?  We don't have anyone else on the horizon at the moment.
