i'm starting to wonder if the Lerners have a plan to increase attendance and solve our first base problem - selecting a random fan out of the crowd each game to play 1B.

I'm going to start riding the "Nick Johnson for first base" train now that Hawpe is going to San Diego

"Nick Johnson to the Nats' DL" train is more accurate.

May I make a suggestion? Mike Rizzo has already put together a package for Zack Greinke, only to have it shot down by the pitcher. Maybe he can pare the package down a little bit and re-offer it for Billy Butler. Presumably, he knows what the Royals want already, and knows what they already agreed to once. If he could swing a deal for Billy Butler I think we'd all be pretty much thrilled.

Billy Butler career vs. RHP... .290/.347/.429, a double every 15 ABs
Billy Butler career vs. LHP... .321/.392/.530, a double every 12 ABs

He has a career OPS of .845 when batting fifth, and turns 25 in April.

Butler is a terrible defender and gets away with being called a power hitter while not really hitting home runs. He's a big doubles guy. I don't see Rizzo trading for a guy that is probably a worse defender than Dunn when supposedly that was the reason we didn't offer him a fourth year.

Kila Ka'aihue is much more intriguing and would cost a lot less in prospects considering Eric Hosmer is about a year away from being their starting first baseman.

Ka'aihue's last three seasons at AAA:

2008: .316/.439/.640
2009: .252/.392/.433
2010: .319/.463/.598

The only downside to the guy is the fact that he turns 27 in March.

Kila would be a great option too.

For those who worry Kila might be AAAA, check out his 2010 major league stats:
2010 (age 26): 52 games, 8 HRs, .217/.307/.394
September/October only: 28 games, 6 HRs, .261/.367/.511 (.878 OPS)
So he did adjust. Or, maybe, he was pulling a Wily Mo Pena.

I have no clue on the guy in Boston.  The Royals have a bunch of corner infield/DH types so they may make good trading partners.  Maybe we could trade a middle infield prospect to them plus minor league arm.

Ben G of MASN brought up the possibility of going after Fielder next year.  I don't really see that happening.  I would also be a bit concerned about him going the way of his dad or Mo Vaughn or any of the other guys who crapped out in their early 30's with the same body type (read: fat).

I would bet Rizzo prefers a guy like James Loney for a longer term solution.  I'm not sure I'd agree, but that appears to be they type of team he's building.

Fielder had a -7.8 UZR last year, his career UZR is -6.7, he's had a plus rating once (2009).

He's got DH written all over him.

Yeah, that, plus his body will likely start to break down because of his weight problems.  5'11 guys weren't built to carry 280 lbs.

Ummmm.......  Adrian Gonzalez?

Plus the Sawx are already over the luxury tax threshhold.  I think Beckett and Dice-K are coming off the books but they're likely to try and replace them with pitching and not a big money DH.

The Red Sox would be unbelievably good if they managed to run Youk, Crawford, Gonzalez, and the rest out there and then add a DH like Fielder.  Is there any precedence for signing a DH for that much $100+ million?

Lars Anderson.  Not to be confused with the Lars Andersen auto museum in Boston, which is really cool.  Lars the ballplayer is probably a better "prospect" than Kila because he's 4 or so years younger, has good natural power, and has shown some plate discipline even in his down year (2009).  Kila is more proven and has shown his minor league numbers for OBP aren't fluky.  I'm sure Billy Beane would prefer Kila, but I think Rizzo would be a Lars guy if he had to choose.  Lars is not agile or a good defender, so Rizzo might not think highly of him.

Beckett has 4 more years under contract (signed extension last April, otherwise your memory would be right), Dice-K has 2 @ $10MM and$10MM.  That said, the Red Sox have over $55MM coming off payroll next year, with about $21 - 23MM likely to go to Gonzalez.  Figure Ortiz, Drew, Papelbon, Scutaro, and Cameron are over $50MM between them, plus Wheeler, Varitek, Wakefield are another $6MM or so.  So they have payroll flexibility below the luxury tax threshold, which they are usually around.  I'll guess they want to avoid the 40% tax.

Contract is up after 2012, but team has an option for 2013 at $13MM.  When he gets too old to field 3d, they can DH him.

Alberto or Adrian.  Because one you have, and the other is about to sign a 7 year extension.
