Damon in RF? He's a noodlearm. Houston is just messing with us.

Fixed.
Minty, it will be a group effort.

Johnny Damon? Hell no.
If we sign Johnny Damon, I will join the "what the freak is up with Rizzo" chorus.
Who do you want to lead off?

Lee it is, then.

Hope LaRoche doesn't kill it for the O's.

Though, their offense could be fun to watch this year.

teams like orioles, pirates and a's have all made solid moves this offseason.  we continue to just give away our best players and harp on the fact we've signed one player.

this crap is awful.

I'd sooner let Desmond lead off at this point.  Johnny Damon helps us not.

Damon can still get on base.  Could be a nice bridge for a year if necessary.

This team doesn't need a "bridge for a year."

Damon in Nats Park would hit 15 - 20 HRs and still get on at a .350+ clip.  Stick him in left.

Tippy Yunnan, after a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale at the Christmas Holiday Party.

Right field is quite reachable at Nats Park. Lefty HR hitters get destroyed in comerica, as he did. He hit 24, 12, 17, and 24 in old and new Yankee.  James projects 12 assuming he's back at Comerica.  HisOBP has notbeen below .350 since 2003.  James also projects him at .352.  He is still one of the better leadoff hitters in baseball.

My uneducated guess is the Willingham deal will lead to a flury of moves and by tomorrow morning the Nationals will have a first baseman.

Optimism:

1. a disposition or tendency to look on the more favorable side of events or conditions and to expect the most favorable outcome.
2. the belief that good ultimately predominates over evil in the world.
3. the belief that goodness pervades reality.
4. the doctrine that the existing world is the best of all possible worlds.

Not sure how thinking the team makes a move to clear salary space with them needing a first baseman and then thinking they get a first baseman is optimism. The best possible outcome would be trading for Greinke and Fielder and getting to hang onto our top prospects. Thinking logically that one move would then lead to other moves is not optimistic it is simply logical and realistic.

O.k. I'll give it a shot.  I'd say the statement, "by tomorrow morning the Nationals will have a first baseman" could be categorized as:

1. a disposition or tendency to look on the more favorable side of events or conditions and to expect the most favorable outcome.   CHECK
2. the belief that good ultimately predominates over evil in the world.  STRETCH
3. the belief that goodness pervades reality.   CHECK
4. the doctrine that the existing world is the best of all possible worldsPARTIAL CHECK

Did I win?

No because I said a first baseman. Not a good first baseman. I am also basing this partly on a Rosenthal article from this morning saying Lee and LaRoche are close to signing and Nats and O's are the front runners and other reports that this Willingham deal was made to free up money for other expected moves. Number 4 in that thing confuses me because wouldn't religious people be DQed from being optimists because they would believe in a better world?

My wife is getting her M.Div. so I'll ask.

Or, you could ask Potomac Cannons because according to his "blog" he's also seeking ordainment.

Is anyone else starting to feel worried about First Base?

LaRoche is the only guy left really worth signing, and he wants a 3 year deal. What he ends up getting could be less. And then there's Derrek Lee, who is kind of the chubby girl in the end of the bar after all the good looking girls are gone.

So, in the game of First Base musical chairs, Lee and LaRoche are left. Meanwhile, the Nats, Orioles, Padres, Jays and Rays are circling. I just don't have the confidence that we're getting our guy. Or any guy.

Sure, trading for Fielder is possible. But he'll cost prospects that we don't have a lot of. And for my money he's a younger, fatter, version of Adam Dunn. I don't see Rizzo wanting to give him a 4 year deal, or more. I'd actually bet that Dunn will age better.

I think I would rather have Lee than LaRoche on a 3 year deal.

He is?  He had the wrist injury a couple years ago and the ligament in his hand last year, but that's all I could find on the injury front for him.

Nagging more than major. The kind that affect production more than playing time.
