Rizzo told Ben that Nats don't need a LH 1B; cares more about splits against RHP than handedness.

So, basically, we need a LH 1B.

Derrek Lee v RHP
2010  452 PAs [395 ABs], 15 HR, .256 /.343 /.430; career .287 / .369 / .512.  .224 ISO to right for his career.  Looks like Lee may be on the radar.

.256 versus RHP last year.

And, he's aging.

But, if it's Lee vs. Morse at 1B, Bernadina in LF... I'll take Lee.

He was injured last year, having a tendon in his hand fixed.  A year or two of Derrek would probably be ok.  Still prefer LaRoche...

Re: Moreland - It would happen if they sign Adrian Beltre.  They are going to play M. Young somewhere, and he's not displacing Kinsler or Andrus.

They have been working to trade Young, as a Beltre deal becomes more likely every day.  I think they would rather trade Young over Moreland, despite his long history with the team.  He's shown signs of aging at the plate and in the field, but his value is still relatively high after their world series run.  Good time to sell.

Yeah, a 1 year deal and then something better for 2012 would be ok, as long as the pitching gets fixed.

The only way they can trade Young is if they eat a ridiculous amount of his contract and he goes to a team that will DH him.  He really can't play 2d / SS /3B anymore.  He's $16 MM a year through 2013, with some deferred.  I don't see them eating $30MM, which is what it would take to move him.

I'll qualify what I said about Young by saying if they took back someone else's ridiculous contract, then it might be possible.  Vernon Wells, Alex Rios, Derek Jeter, Dice-K, Soriano, Zito . . .

LaRoche is looking for a long term relationship.  The Nats are interested in a quickee (1 year, maybe 2, at their choice).

My guess is if they get Lee for first then Willingham gets traded for pitching and they find a left handed left fielder from a couple minor league contracts; Hawpe, Church.

Getting Lee on a one year deal then going after Prince Fielder(who's definetly goin to test the market next summer) or Pujols(you can always dream right) in FA next year.

Nats, Orioles, Padres closing in on Lee and LaRoche.
It's kind of like musical chairs.  I'd settle for Hawpe or some other position conversion, but I'm warming to D. Lee once I saw he hits righties well.

As for left field, if Willingham is traded, please sign Johnny Damon.  Lead him off, and let Werth, Morse, and Bernie juggle CF and RF.

Damon
Desmond
Zimmerman
Werth
Lee/LaRoche /Hawpe
Morse/Espinosa
Espinosa / Ramos-Flores
Pudge -Ramos-Flores/ Bernie (Nyjer)

but is that a better line-up than we've had in recent years?  i'm sorry, i'm trying to be optimistic, but i just don't know how good of an OF it would be if we have Morse and Bernadina in at the same time, just my two cents.

If we sign Johnny Damon, Morse and Bernadina would split time in left.

No, Damon in left., Morse in right, Werth in CF v. lefties, and Werth in right Bernie CF v. righties.

Damon, even at this stage, would be the best leadoff hitter we've had not named Soriano.  While he's not anywhere near Soriano's power, with his still effective baserunning and his OBP, he's likely to score more runs than even Soriano did in 2006.  Only perhaps when we went NJ / RZ / Dunn / Willingham would we have had a more effective batting order.  If Desmond has any improvement at all, that order is good 1 - 6.

If we sign Johnny Damon, I will join the "what the freak is up with Rizzo" chorus.
