There's a very perceptive comment on MLBTR: this is the first time that Rizzo has negotiated with a free agent or another team, or with anybody actually, in a public way. There's no element of covertness, or surprise, or whatever this time; it's a very public, protracted, yucky process. Rizzo's first. Rodriguez, Marquis, even Capps to some extent were very quietly handled behind the scenes, as were the trades. That's what makes this Hudson thing so weird.
