I'm convinced that SNLVAR is a made up stat.

Orlando Hudson is clearly their first choice, though Hudson's agent is looking for a huge payday, reportedly $9 million. Today's signing of Miguel Tejada by the Orioles for around $6 million should indicate to Hudson that he won't get even that much money.

I agree with this. I think he'll sign somewhere for about $7 mil per year.

Overall value, they are very similar. Hudson made 3.6 as a FA last year. There's no way he'll get 9 this year. 7 sounds about right.

Hudson also had incentives that brought his contract and bonuses up to near $8m, per Cots. He had 631 plate appearances, so only missed $10K in bonuses.

Quote
Orlando Hudson 2b
1 year/$3.38M (2009)

    * 1 year/$3.38M (2009)
o signed by LA Dodgers as a free agent 2/20/09
o $0.38M signing bonus (deferred, without interest)
          o 09:$3M
          o $4.62M in performance bonuses: $0.15M each for 150, 175 PAs; $0.2M each for 200, 225, 250, 275, 300 PAs; $0.25M each for 325, 350, 375, 400, 425, 450, 475, 500, 525, 550, 575 PAs; 10,000 for each PA 576-632
o bonuses beyond 550 PAs deferred without interest
What we do not know is if he'd take another contract with most of the money in bonuses.  My guess is no.  But $5 -6 M guarantee and another $1 -2M in tougher to make bonuses is better than last year.

If a month from now Marquis is our big off season move, there will be pressure on the team to spend. Just think how much the local media will hammer (or just ignore) them if that is the worst team in baseball's big move. We're not the only team in this position either.

My problem with bonuses for position players is they are all offense based goals. If you are signing a player for his glove, why not base his bonus money on games finished?

then why are we waiting? we should be making some moves right now while there are still a few decent guys left.

He's right this time.  Now that Pineiro is out of the market, it's (quoting Dan Rather  ) "thinner than turnip soup."

Garland and Smoltz are the only free agent starters worth a crap, and Hudson's the only decent MI.

This team better be willing to part with Willingham or accept another 95+ loss season if they don't act soon.

thank you knorr.

it is time to put up or shut up. are they happy with 90-100 losses again or are they ready to take the next step and add a few more players to really help us?

Pinero is the suck. You will see. I still want them to throw money at Wang and Garland.

I will defer to you on this, I was just poking fun at SF's impatience.

Why get our hands on the Wang when we can pay for the Sheets...

wtf?

Ignoring the quadruple entendres in that question, Wang has been hurt 1 time. Sheets, a lot more than that.

Who cares?  It's not about whether Pineiro is good or not - it's a matter of supply and demand.  Now that he's off the market, you have a different ratio of teams vying for SP and available "decent" SP.

And Wang? Really? I don't trust pitchers with arm problems (which is why I'm not high on Sheets either).
I will defer to you on this, I was just poking fun at SF's impatience.
Yeah, he's been whining for nothing for a while.  I'm just concerned that his (and our) worst fears could come to fruition at this point.
