Why would a move to second help his wrist?

Usually it requires less of a throw to 1b because of the shorter distances. Less velocity, less wrist snap, less chance of injury.

Yep, this is our spring training roster.
Nah, opening day roster.

Playoff roster.  Freakin' pessimists.

As for Nick Green and Jed Lowrie -

Nick Green was a spotty fielder at SS.  Between Lugo and Green, and a few innings to Lowrie and some AAAA types, the Red Sox had about the worst rated SS defense last year before they brought in Alex Gonzalez.  Green has a cannon for arm, but it is like one of those unrifled cannons that shoot shells with extreme inaccuracy.  Having said that from memory, I checked his UZR ratings on Fangraphs and what it suggests is that he has decent range at SS and an ability to start/turn DPs which gave him a slight positive fielding value at SS last year.  Still, the sample size (750 innings and < 300 chances handled for his career would make me say "small sample size" and not even trust the range numbers.  As for 2d, he's had double the amount of innings over his career and is less than run below average.  As for his bat, it was bad enough after June last year that the Red Sox felt it was a need to get him out of the line up.  My bottom line on Green is he is a middle infield back up who gives you nothing special off the bench.  I do not see him as a starter for a season, but he can fill in well for a month or so.  Really an AAAA player not worth more than MLB minimum.  With Desmond and Espinosa, I would rather see them play if there is need for a one month fill in.  I'd rather play Willie at 2d as a backup and get a corner infielder as the last bench bat.

Lowrie, on the other hand, is much more interesting, but he would cost you more.  He is likely to start the year in Pawtucket to get innings in, if he is not a piece of an Adrian Gonzalez or Miguel Cabrera trade.  His wrist was not right last year and required two surgeries (before the season and in April).  He has a very good defensive reputation, so good that he was shifted to SS from 2d in the minors.  His bat is supposed to be MLB average, which is good for a plus defender in the middle infield.   I do not see the Sox giving him up cheap, but I could see them moving him because they have a lot of SS depth a year or two away (including Iglesias, who had a decent AFL and is an MLB fielder already).  Sox and Nats do not match well for trades because the deepest positions in the Red Sox organization are catcher, SS, and CF, and they have a number of arms for fill in roles at high levels and upside at low levels.  If there were a power prospect (Marrero?  Burgess?) then there might be something to talk about.

I thought the injury was to his glove hand wrist?

I'd rather not trade for Lowrie/Green when there are comparable players still on the free agent market.

Then his injury is not that big a deal. It will heal and he'll be fine.

If I'm Rizzo, I make a call and see if they want to move Lowrie - if the price is decent make a deal. If not, move on.

PatsNats09- who are you thinking about?

The Nationals agreed to terms on minor league deals with infielder Eric Bruntlett and first baseman Josh Whitesell, according to a team press release.

Bruntlett, 32 in March, was acquired by the Phillies in November of '07 along with Brad Lidge.  Bruntlett hit .171/.224/.238 in 118 plate appearances this year while playing all around the diamond.  The Phils released Bruntlett in November and ultimately replaced him with Juan Castro.

Whitesell, 28 in April, hit .194/.346/.287 in 133 plate appearances for the D'Backs this year as well as .293/.398/.471 at Triple A.  He raked at Triple A in '08, and has at times shown an impressive ability to draw walks.  Whitesell came up through the Expos organization, but was claimed off waivers by the D'Backs in March of '08.  According to MLB.com's Steve Gilbert, the D'Backs were unable to sell Whitesell's rights to a Japanese team and non-tendered him at the December 12th deadline.

Give me some feedback on these two chaps.

Bruntlett - 2b, doesn't appear to be a hitter

Whitesell -1b - Corrected: Appears to have done well in the minors with the bat.

I'm sure I'm missing something.

Bruntlett can't hit at all. Rizzo, keep him in Syracuse.

Wasn't it Eric Bruntlett who turned the triple play to end that game for the Phillies vs. the Mets last year?

I don't think even the AL lets you have a DH for your shortstop.

Who was the guy who tried for a fourth out on his unassisted triple play?

I figure if Eric Bruntlett makes the roster it will be at the expense of Willie Harris

I gotta think he's purely organizational depth.

He does make an excellent late innings defensive minded utility player, though.

Brian - is that because you see Willie traded or because you see a different set of 4th / 5th OFs.  Perhaps Winn, who would make Willie a bit redundant?

Anyone that has played 7 out of the 9 positions at least once in an MLB game certainly has some value.

Up until this past season, he's been solid in the field as well posting a positve 12 UZR in the past 7 seasons.
