So why aren't we pursuing Uggla?  he seems to fill a big hole at 2nd, provides a nice solid bat, and couldn't be any worse at defense than any of our current options.

Wouldn't you think that .260, 30 HRs, 100 RBIs sitting in the #5 slot would be a fine addition to our lineup?

Are you out of your mind?  20 2B qualified for defensive rankings last season.  Uggla was 19th.  In 2007 there were 24 that qualified, Uggla was 22nd.  He's horrible defensively.

He's got a good, but not great, bat.  That's not good enough to make up for horrific defense up the middle.  Add in a 5m price tag and Uggla is one of the worst values in baseball.

Very easy answer. I'll break it down.
- Our offense is good. We have sluggers. We have Dunn, Willingham, and Zimmerman. The team can score runs.
- Our defense is bad. We give up tons of runs on shoddy defense, especially in the middle infield.
- Our pitchers are ground-ball pitchers. This means infield defense is even more important.
- Dan Uggla does nothing to improve our offense. He either leads the MLB in strikeouts, or is 2nd to Mark Reynolds (I forget). He makes Adam Dunn look like Nyjer Morgan.
- Dan Uggla is amazingly bad at defense. He will make us give up even more runs and lose even more games.
- Dan Uggla is amazingly bad at defense. He will add .5 to each ground-ball pitcher's ERA.
- Dan Uggla costs way more than Pete Orr, and Pete Orr is a better baseball player than Dan Uggla.
Yes, I went there.

Uggla is everything Rizzo doesn't want at 2B.

Since we're on the topic, I agree. Especially for a new guy. It's a bit disconcerting/weird/confusing/disrespectful (or as disrespectful as one can be on a message board).

The team's need, and stated goal of the GM, is to improve the MI defense.  The suggestion above was to add one of the 2-3 worst defensive 2B in the game, one who would require us trading something away to acquire him.  How is, "Are you out of your mind?" not an appropriate response to that?

The question wasn't directed in particular towards that specific comment, but rather towards the attitude of your posts in general.

I don't see any harsh comments there. Its just a way to express how dumb he thinks it is. It may sound demeaning but I usually don't take comments like this as personal unless he directly calls someone an ass or another obscenity

what position will the next acquisition play?

i like the fact that Rizzo has been flying under the radar and i'm curious what you all think he will do next.

I am hoping it it's Hudson then Chapman.

Fair enough, but I'm still wondering if adding a true bat to the line-up would offset the defensive liability.

If you don't have a thick skin, you shouldn't be on Interent forums.  So no offense taken.

Just raising a talking point - wondering if we're better off having another power bat versus the defensive shortcomings.

BTW, Uggla's 2008 wasn't as bad as his 2009:

- 5th in fielding percentage among NL 2B
- 6th in revised zone rating
- 7th in outs outside his zone.

That's the math every GM should be doing.  Is improving defense going to prevent more runs than adding offense will generate for us?

I haven't heard much news at all in the last few days. What is going on?

Have any teams done much since we since Capps? Guessing it was quiet over Christmas and we'll get busy again tomorrow.

this team still has work to do. The rumors have gone cold. Many affordable players are still available. We must scoop them up before real teams swoop in.
