So SF dogs you for being ready to dig up a crappy stat, and you prove him right by using "save percentage"?  Oy vey.

For whatever reason, Capps was hit much harder last year than ever before.  Still had similar control, still struck guys out at a respectable rate, but his HR and hits allowed went way up.  That could be a fluke.

I think it's worth seeing if it was a fluke and going after him.

That save record isn't even good, even if it means little.

That FIP is pretty high.

But sign him, sign Mac, and maybe 1 more guy. The pen needs live arms.

Starting in 2006 (first real year):

BABIP:

2006 - .287
2007 - .271
2008 - .272
2009 - .370

I think it's just an off year.

Or.....everyone could learn to read and notice the mention of elbow problems.  He went on the DL once and was listed as day-to-day for a good chunk of the season.  Despite that, which would lead to his stuff not being quite as good and getting hit a bit more, he upped his save %.  That's a pretty good indicator that he's a pitcher and not just some guy with a uncontrollable fastball.

Whats with the obsession with macdougal?

He's very popular among those who won his game worn jersey in the Nats Foundation drawing last season.

What I love about Capps is that in his career, 271.2 IP, the guy has only walked 50 batters.

Macdougal on the other hand - 312.2, 165 BB.

and on pace for 150 walks in his next 100 IP.  He's the Anti-Strasburg.

But they both have red hair!  We should field a pitching staff of all red haired guys with goatees.

According to mlbstraderumors, the Nats aren't interested in Johnny Damon - finally, some good news.

With his past issues he may just get Debbie Taylor run out of town.  That, kids, is a positive.

MLBTR:

The Nationals are making a "strong run" at free agent hurler Jon Garland according to FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal. The righthander is looking for a three year deal, however the Nats would prefer to limit a contract to two years. Rosenthal also lists Jason Marquis and Doug Davis and possible targets for Washington.

GM Mike Rizzo confirmed the team's interest in Garland earlier this month, saying "He's one of the 10 names we've been talking about throughout the whole winter." The 30-year-old landed just one year and a guaranteed $7.25MM last offseason, so a three year deal may be a little to ambitious.

Ken Rosenthal: Nats making strong run at Garland. Wants 3 yrs. Nats would prefer two. Other possibilities for Nats: Marquis, D. Davis

I agree with the Nats that I wouldn't give him anything more than 2 years but I believe to get a deal done with him you have to go 3.

I don't understand how these guys' minds work. Average value is more important than years, right? Sounds like the agents at work.

I've never been a big Garland fan, although I think he'd help this team.  I'd consider 2 years with a vesting option based on innings pitched in year 2.  We can always shut him down or trade him as long as he still pitches like he usually has (takes the ball, gives up his 3 - 4 runs over 6 or 7 innings).  If he breaks down, then his option does not vest.

why not a fan of Garland? He is what he is. Innings eater #4 starter. Will give you a chance to win.

He's durable. Not too old. Can help guide our young starters.

#4 starter for most means a #2 for the Nats... hell, he'd likely pass Lannan because he was the 'big' name signed this year.
