Per MLBTR/Sir William Blahblah

The Washington Nationals are one of Capps' finalists, reports MLB.com's Bill Ladson (via Twitter). Of all the interested teams, Washington should provide one of the clearest paths to a closing role for Capps.

That would be some relief going into next year compared to last year.

A deal of 3/9m with incentives up to 12m would be fantastic.  Mike Gonzalez may have driven the cost up, but I doubt Capps goes too crazy.

3 years? no way. 2 should suffice.

How can Capps' terrible last season be explained? Just bad luck? :lmao:

Possibly. I'm sure someone can dig up some stats that say he had crappy D and bad luck or something.

Probably. They can find stats to suit any opinion. If this was any other guy they would be dogging Capps and saying he sucks.

His save percentage went up last year.  His numbers stayed mostly where they were the three previous years.  His "terrible" year was one of 27/32 in saves and the same K/9 as usual.  He had elbow problems for part of the year which led to his WHIP being over 1.25 for the first time and his FIP over 4.25 for the first time.  Even with the health problems, and control issues it caused, he was still effective and he had a better year finishing games than his previous 3.

Of course that requires looking at something other than ERA for five seconds and doing some actual analysis.

Yup.  3 years, with incentives, for a 26 year old who has had minor elbow problems once and gotten better each year.

saves? :lmao:

MacDougal was nearly perfect in 20+ Opps and he'll be lucky to get more than a cheap 1 year deal.

Hey, "bad luck" is exactly how SF explains away his favorite players bad stretches.

Gotta love ignoring reality.  Capps 06, 07 and 08 were better than any year that MacWalkal has ever put up.  Capps is 7 years younger, has more than one pitch, can actually control his pitches, was better in K/9, and actually bothered to strike out more guys than he walked last year.  It's not even close.

Of course when you come in with a 6-3 lead and get a save with a 6-5 lead and bases loaded, it does count as "perfect".

Gotta love forming someones opinions for them.  I was simply pointing out that be "Nearly Perfect" SF meant the 20/21 stat.  Of course he wasn't "perfect" by any means or measure.

I want us to go after Capps aggressively, I would much prefer him over any of our other current closing options.

Man, you have come on this board being pretty belligerent.

I thought you didn't know that Klej was 20/21 when you said "nearly perfect?" but now I see your meaning.

idk, that'd be nice. something like:

bergmann, clippard, burnett, klej, bruney, capps.

would be an above league average pen.

What reliever with major league closing experience that likes playing in DC, has a chance of signing here, and won't cost a pick do you recommend? Because the only other player I can think of is Chad Cordero, since Gary Majewski just signed a minor league deal somewhere.

So SF dogs you for being ready to dig up a crappy stat, and you prove him right by using "save percentage"?  Oy vey.

For whatever reason, Capps was hit much harder last year than ever before.  Still had similar control, still struck guys out at a respectable rate, but his HR and hits allowed went way up.  That could be a fluke.

I think it's worth seeing if it was a fluke and going after him.
