Capps wants another opportunity to close, and Washington might represent just the situation for him. During the last three years, the righty saved 66 games for the Pirates. Though he had a combined 2.58 ERA from 2007 to 2008, that number soared to 5.80 in 2009.

It seems like a perfect fit. We literally have no closer right now and I don't know on how many teams Capps can go to that will give him the opportunity he will get here.

How about a 2 year deal for 6.5m, 3 in 2010 and 3.5 in 2011, with a team option of 4.5m in 2012 if Capps performs well? He would be 29 near the end of the 2012 season and by that time he'd either be Storen's set-up man or he could go somewhere else while Storen closes for the next 5+ years.

I'm curious, other than the trade for Morgan and Burnett, who are the other Pirates? I'm drawing a blank. I'm not counting Capps since he's not actually a Nat yet.

Would Capps be OK with backing up Storen, even though Storen is younger? I don't know much about Capps as a person, but I think from what I've seen, that he's a legitimate 8th inning guy.

Yeah I meant Capps. Although I would love to cut Nieves and trade for Doumit.

Because the Pirates have had good players over the years and trade them away for junk. Really the only thing I'm going off of is that Morgan + Burnett >>> Kearns, FLop, WMP, etc.

Gotcha.

As we know, there can be good players on bad teams. Don't take my skepticism to mean I don't like the players we've got from Pittsburgh. I really like Morgan and Burnett and I think Capps would be a huge upgrade over someone like...Villione or several other guys in the pen. I think Dunn brings a lot to this team too, so it seems like we're getting several of the better guys off those bad teams, so we'll see, just don't get too many of them. There's a reason those two teams are bad like us.

That's why I was glad Rizzo brought in two guys with rings (Bruney and I-Rod). I hope he continues to bring in winners to help change the environment here in D.C.

As of right now I think this team is already better than it was last season.

Dunn
Willingham
Morgan
Desmond
Zimmerman
Burnett
Pudge
Lannan
Clippard
Bruney
Hopefully healthy Flores
Hopefully effective Olsen

possibly Storen and Strasburg at some point

The MI is still a question mark, and we need a few bp arms and hopefully 2 starters. I think the above will make a healthy core and with a few more pieces this team will be much better. Probably not contenders yet but should play easily better than last year's record.

It does seem that way but it also feels like we are saying the same thing every off-season and it never turns out how we envision it.

The rotation is still a big question mark. We absolutely, positively have to sign 2 FA starters. I am thinking they get one average guy (i.e. Garland, Washburn, etc) and then settle for Livan.

I am not fully sold on Guzman and Desmond in the middle infield. I really would have liked to seen us go after Hudson or a DeRosa.

Not sold on Dukes in the OF.

Well this is the first time I've really been in to a team enough to follow an offseason closely. Became a fan 2008 but didn't follow as closely as this year.

Agreed about Dukes, but that is not as big of a worry as the pitching.
