Yeah, he was rightfully ejected. You can't slam your helmet down and not expect to be ejected. On ESPN they stated that Harper's teammates had been pretty upset with what was thought to be a rather poor strike zone. Doesn't excuse the behavior per se, but at least it wasn't a knee jerk reaction.

Completely agree. Everyone wants to "fix umpiring" in baseball, but that also means fixing the player. Baseball is the only sport I've ever seen that lets a player or a coach get in to it like that with an official.

From what I saw on the HBO Series with the Capitals and Penguins, hockey players often have a few choice words for the officials. We just don't hear them.

I don't think anyone here is overreacting. He deserved the ejection, though.

Hockey has a system though. Only Captains and Assistant Captains are allowed to talk with the refs. Anyone else is supposed to be tossed.

I agree with those who say the ejection was deserved. I don't think it was a big deal though, and I imagine it'll blow over in a few days. Does anyone remember this? It's a similar incident that happened on May 28th, in which Bryce did not get ejected (but probably should have).

See this bothers me. Shows a pattern of behavior. I know he's 18, but its going to take a rather humbling experience to get him to calm down.

On the other hand, I remember reading that Pete Rose getting tossed out of a lot of games

I can't believe anyone is defending Harper here.

Any player, regardless of age or stature is going to get run for slamming his helmet down in front of an umpire like that. It's just common baseball etiquette to not show up an ump like that... regardless of the call.

Did you ever behave inappropriately when you were 18? Did you do it more than once? That's a pattern! I'm pretty much certain that we all did. Either he'll learn to control his emotions better as he matures, or he won't. I think he will, and it's certainly not worth wringing our hands about this. The most likely worst case is that he'll start performing better in AA and, presumably, AAA next year, but Rizzo and friends will make him stay in the minors a few months longer before they bring him up to make sure he can control his emotions/carry himself like a major leaguer.

Honestly? not like this. Not in public with random people. Its one thing to do it with your parents. Thats normal. But to do it in the workplace is another.

But I hope you're right. Age tends to mature people.

I don't care about the ejection. He deserved to be ejected. I care about people using this to say there's more proof that Harper is a douche/arrogant/jerk/etc.

Until people come out saying that his teammates don't like him (it seems that his teammates love him), I don't really give a crap about incidents like this.

Produce and be a good teammate. freak the haters.

Did you play a professional sport when you were 18? Hard to compare baseball (or any sports) to regular life.

Yeah, but if your job was like mine when you were 18, you probably had .01% of the pressure in your work environment that he has, (not to mention .0001% of the pay

Harper is arrogant. Thats why we like him. I like a guy who swaggers up to the plate, knowing he is going to own this pitcher.

There's a difference between being arrogant/confident and being a hot head. This isn't the first time an umpire is going to make a bad call on him nor the first time he'll be thrown at or jeered. He needs to learn to deal with it. Going after an ump or blowing kisses to pitchers is just juvenile.

The in front of the umpire got him run. He's got to learn that. If he needs to vent, do it on the water cooler in the club house. Chuck the helmet against the fence. Do not do it so it bounces near the plate.

Even now, I really don't... I talk back to my parents, but never with anyone else. Regardless, my situation is very different than Harper's (in that I'm a normal kid and he's a prodigy), so it's not fair to compare any of us to him.
