I remember discussions about him- he was coming out of a Northern highschool, so people were bashing his level of competition,

It didn't have traction because the guy went 25th and signability wasn't the issue with him, competition/ability was. Look at the MLB.com review of him on the draft tracker from 09:

Pretty big difference from moving into 1st round discussions and moving into top 10 discussions. The enhanced scouting report mentions teams not being sure if he had everyday CF potential. The Angels had two late 1st round picks and took a chance on the 2nd one. It's working out for them.

Third AB, 4 pitch strikeout. Apparently, he calls his time in the batter box his "two minutes of fury." His antics in between swings may become tiresome, but if he performs like an all-star I doubt many of our fans will care.

Great news! It looks like Harper could be playing quite a bit of center field. Apparently he had a good game defensively in right field last night, too.

"Bryce Harper, the Nationals’ 18-year-old phenom outfielder, will see significant playing time in center field for Class A Hagerstown, according to Suns Manager Brian Daubach. Harper is expected to start at least once in center this weekend, as the Suns finish up a season-opening four-game series at the Rome (Ga.) Braves.

The Nationals have previously said Harper would play some center field in the minor leagues, but Daubach suggested that Harper’s playing time could be fairly equally split between right field and center. Obviously, at the big league level, the Nationals are already locked in at right field with Jayson Werth, who is in the first year of a seven-year $126 million contract."

If he does well, I wonder if Rizzo will forget about picking JBJ if he's still available when we take our second pick late in the draft. It should be interesting.

You should never draft for need in the MLB draft.

Way too many things can change by the time the player is ready.

Always go BPA.

Of course, it's ok to look at organizational needs like do you need a hitter or a pitcher more... but, if you go hitter, it doesn't matter what position he plays... always go BPA.

That makes sense. And even if Bradley were to make the team next year, and Harper joins the Nats at some point in 2012, I'm sure Harper and Werth could probably play LF and RF, respectively, (or vice versa). And we'd have some real outfield depth.

Listening to the game last night, the announcer called it as a delayed double steal, though it seems possible it could be viewed either way.

Anyone feels like a meet-up for a late April Hagerstown home game, let me know. I'm up for it. Of course, I live in Gaithersburg, so it's an easier trip than the one to Nats Park.

If you call the Suns ticket center or whatever, you can get group deals that include all you can eat picnic type meal. My wife and I had planned one for May 7th but I couldn't get 20 people together to go. I had 11, but couldn't get more. If someone does this, I'd be good for a Fri/Sat game as those are my days off.
