I have one episode left of the original V: The Final Battle. Despite the main characters tight pants and casting for the obvious resemblance to Mark Hammill, it's riveting.

They will be lucky if the new V comes close to being that awesome.

The original V series (following the two miniseries) is free on WB.com

Amazing!

My thoughts on the series finale of Monk, and the merits and flaws of the Monk series as a whole, are now online here.

I love the Venture Brothers series on [adult swim].  I haven't had Cartoon Network since Comcast made it a digital only channel but my new HDTV pulls it in.

I'm pretty sure I'll never buy a real BD player.  Fortunately the price of alternative methods of acquiring HD content has gotten to the point where it's both practical and looks great.

My wife hates the clutter of books, movies, and CDs around the house, and I am really coming around. I get livid when you cannot rent  a movie online or from Redbox, buy music for download, or get an electronic version of a book.

For instance, the new X-Files movie is not available for electronic rental or purchase. X-Files. What an idiotic choice by Fox. I'll get it on DVD for 5 bucks used from Amazon at some point, but that really bothers me.

I had a 300 disc Sony DVD player for years that finally went belly up. I now have a Pioneer upconverting DVD player, a Samsung DVD/VCR recorder, and a Samsung BluRay player. I have DVD and CD cases everywhere. Just noted that Sony now has 2 new BluRay 400 disc player. May well start saving as I'm sick of using all of the above instead of one good one which holds all my discs.

If they are connected to the same TV, you can get rid of at least one of those, the Pioneer up-converting DVD player.  All BluRay players also function as an up-converting DVD player.

I love digital copies of music, because I am allowed to burn them to CD for in the car or whatever.  Video content is different though.  You can't burn them to DVD in most cases, so you are stuck either watching it on your computer or if you have a specific player for your TV.  You can't lend it to a friend or take it to their house for a movie night or something like that.

I always rent movies digitally either through Amazon, Xbox, or the Playstation store, or through my Netflix subscription, but if I want to own a copy, I'll always buy a physical copy until there is some better system out.

It could be that the Pioneer is a better upconverter to his eyes.  Part of the reason I ended up going with a WD TV Live is because of the superb upconversion it performs.  Well, that and because it's an awesome device that plays everything.

Yeah they are pretty sweet.  I'm thinking about maybe getting a nettop computer at some point to be a media center.  I'm not sure that they can handle flash too well yet, but they are getting better, especially the ones with nvidia's ion instead of the horrid GMA graphics.  Something that can do hulu and everything else like unbox and videos I rip from my DVDs.  The Boxee box looks pretty cool too.

Chief- Tell me more about this WD TV Live. And you're right, the Pioneer is a superb upconverter, plus it plays more audio files. I bought it after my multiplayer crashed. The DVD/VCR recorder was next, since I had tons of tapes of Shawn I wanted to put on DVD for me and my ex. Last was the BluRay. I'd really love a media server but they're a tad too pricey for an unsalaried nurse.

It's a small box that can play most video audio and picture formats, has composite, component, and hdmi output with upconversion, and can play anything connected via usb or network shares, including wireless (though approved adapters for that are sold separately).  It comes with a tiny remote and a decent interface.  I'm not sure I'd recommend it for totally non-computer people but if you have an okay amount of technical savvy or know someone who does, it's a great way to play back media.  The only downside is that it does NOT play discs in any way shape or form.

Since I make digital backup copies of all my movies and store the originals, this isn't an issue for me, but I can see where that might be a turnoff for more mainstream users.  Then again the thing is so small that you could easily add it to whatever existing equipment you have without using much space.  It's also compatible with universal remotes if that's your thing.

Attached a pic of the device and connected 2.5" external hard drive sitting next to my cable box.  It's a 160GB drive holding about 50 movies with room for maybe 10 more.  Granted most of those have been re-encoded to take up less space.  Perfect DVD rips take about 7-8 gigs apiece, whereas perfect bluray rips are usually about 45.
