so it sounds like mcgeary had a really rough inning?

Ah darnit, McGeary hadn't faced more than 5 batters until this inning. Then he let up two singles. On the next batter he got ahead in the count, but then threw three balls. He had a full count and threw a breaking ball for a strike (according to Hagerstown announcer), but the ump called ball to load the bases. The next batter hit a three RBI single, and while the announcer wasn't clear, it sounded like some shoddy defense lacking in fundamentals. Now the Suns are down, 0-3.

The only thing McGeary did wrong, was walk the batter. Every batter that has gotten a hit off of him, has done so through the infield defense.

sounds like some tough luck for our top pitching prospects today. actually sounds like the defense behind them is the reason we're down in both games.

Yep, a lack of middle infield defense is killing this organization from top to bottom.

I have heard from folks around the teams that the defense has been poor and the cold weather playing havoc with the offense getting on track

I have to think that they are going to address the middle infield positions this year in the draft in the top 10 rounds. With Desmond's injury and the fallout related to Alvarez, we are basically losing (maybe not for Desmond) two of our top prospects for 2B/SS. Drafting Espinosa was a good start, but it seems like they need to continue going after guys like that this year as well.

At least Potomac is raking tonight. 7 runs through 3 innings.

Rooney is 2/2 with a HR and 3 RBIs.

Burgess is 1/1 with a Single, 2 RBIs, and a walk.

Marrerro is 1/1 with a Single, Run, and a walk.

McGeary is slowly losing control of the game.

He is done, still responsible for one more runner. He didn't get help from the Ump or from his defense. Just one extra base hit that got stuck in the corner. Mostly rotten luck, but still the fault has to be placed on his shoulders. He didn't have his best stuff with him today, that is for sure.

5.0 IP, 5 ER, 6 H, 2 BB, 2 SO

10 groundouts, 1 flyout

Jewett finally used some sense and placed Plasencia at the leadoff spot. Now if he would only take King out of the 3 hole and stops calling crazy double steals, the line up might actually be effective on a nightly basis.

as i said detwiler was fine tonight, i'm happy with his start. it sucks mcgeary fell apart later on in the game. i still have faith in both of them.

still not good enough from Detwiler. he was a 6th overall pick. he should be dominating by this point.

do you read? trust me man he pitched fine tonight. he would've have 5 innings w/ 1 earned run given up if martinez didn't botch a double play (for the 90th time). and he probably would've been sent out for the 6th. the announcer commented on how solid det was and i'm sure john stearns will say the same thing. you can't tell how a pitcher does from just looking at a box score.

the lack of middle infielders is on jim bowden. he fell in love with toolsy outfielders and we don't have any middle infielders other than espinosa/desmond/the prospect formerly known as smiley who won't ever amount to anything.

Burgess just cranked a 3 run shot. Now 2-2 for the night, with 5 RBIs and a walk.

Plasencia scored all three times he has been on base (one hit, two reached on errors), keep him at leadoff!

okay but in the grand scheme he has still been very disappointing thus far. when you draft a college guy with the 6th overall pick you expect him to advance through your system quickly and pitch well at every level. Ross hasn't been terrible but he's been just kind of mediocre, both last year and so far this year. 4.50~ ERA

no crap. but tonight was a good start for the young man, that's all i've been trying to say. hopefully he can build on this one and continue to get better.

not everyone is gonna move up thru the system like john lannan/jordan zimmermann.

wow. So Burgess has 4 HRs in 54 ABs this year which is really good but his BA (.167) stinks. sounds like the same old from him. it'd be nice if he could even just hit like .260 or so.

Sure, put it on Bowden, but it doesn't change anything. I have noticed that many/most middle infielders in the MLB are from the Latin America countries. It would be good if the Nats could resurrect their scouting down there and actually sign some young middle infield talent, but I am not going to hold my breath. A good AFA signing down there or two would make me pretty happy.
