I may go on Saturday night after the early Caps/Nats games at 1.

do you know the pitching match-ups for their games this weekend?

I am not sure about the opposing teams, but our rotation should go:

Friday: Jeff Mandel
Saturday:  Brad Myers
Sunday:  Will Atwood

I kind of wouldn't mind seeing Meyers pitch.

Quote

Brad Meyers, RHP, Loyola Marymount
Class: Junior
Height/weight: 6-6/195

Draft history: Mets, 2004 (14th round)

2007 season stats: 1-0, 4.50 ERA, 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K

Scouting report: Meyers has a fastball that has been clocked as high as 92-94 mph, but was at 88-91 over the weekend. He throws a slider and a change-up and his fastball has some sink.

Scouts say: "He was Derek Lowe-ish. ... He had no real out pitch. ... He was just OK for a guy being considered in the first round."

Projected round: Supplemental first or second round

how'd we get him in the 5th round?

Looking at the names from 2007, that is turning out to be a very good draft by our organization.

absolutely, especially if Detwiler pans out.

Burgess kind of looks crappy though so far this year. I'm a little concerned with him.

Today's Match-Ups (4/16/09)

AAA: [6:00 PM] Buffalo (1-7) Casey Fossum @ Syracuse (2-5) Marco Estrada
AA: [7:00 PM] Reading (3-3) Vance Worley vs Harrisburg (2-4) Ross Detwiler
A+: [7:05 PM] Potomac (4-4) Cole Rohrbough @ Potomac (4-4) Jeff Mandel
A:   [6:35 PM] Lakewood (3-4) Robert Roth vs Hagerstown (4-2) Terrence Engles

Notes:

- Brad Eldred has a Nats farm system high 5 game hitting streak going.  Despite this, he has yet to go yard in any regular season minor league game.

-  It is Potomac's home opener tonight.  Replica "P-Nats Championship Rings" will be given to the first 1,000 fans through the gates.  This is part of a weekly promotion going on at Pfitzner, named accordingly "Freebie Fridays."  More importantly, Potomac's bats got going in the doubleheader yesterday and hopefully that flame will keep burning throughout this upcoming homestand.

-  Three National's farm games went into extra innings yesterday.  This was a combination of bullpens blowing the game and, yes, some of our batters coming up with clutch hits when needed.  It certainly makes for some interesting results.

Every once in a while, I forget just how young he still is.  But Espinosa is the future.  I hope he goes 3 levels in 2 years and is ready when Guz's contract is up.  Is the thinking he can stick at SS?

Desmond has more power potential but Espinosa is a better overall hitter and has more speed I believe.

Desmond has been known to be a poor defender but I believe he is doing well so far this year. I've heard nothing but positive things about Danny defensively.

Why did he get pulled after just 5 innings, though?  That's odd.

pitch count was at like 83. i don't think he's fully stretched out yet.

Detwiler got bombed tonight in AA: 2.2 IP 4 H 5 R 5 ER 2 BB 4 K 2 HR.

This could be true, as he did pitch mostly in relief this spring training.  I still firmly believe that Detwiler's control issues will be his downfall and that a move to the pen will be best for him.  He can have brilliant stretches for one or even two innings, but falls apart after that.  I'm willing to see how he does as a starter this year, but if there isn't significant improvement, then it may be time to start thinking about a switch....

At this point, just because he WAS a first round pick does not guarantee that he will work out as a starter.  The knock on him at the time we drafted him was that he might never be more than a closer (many scouts projected this as well).  Hopefully he proves them, and me, wrong.

Today's Match-Ups (4/16/09)

AAA: [2:00 PM] Buffalo (1-8) Brandon Knight @ Syracuse (3-5) Craig Stammen
AA: [7:00 PM] Reading (4-3) Michael Stutes vs Harrisburg (2-5) Luis Atilano
A+: [7:05 PM] Myrtle Beach (4-5) Jose Ortegano @ Potomac (4-5) Brad Meyers
A:   [6:35 PM] Lakewood (4-4) Jacob Diekman vs Hagerstown (4-3) Ricardo Pecina

Notes:

-  Nat's Farm high hitting streaks (5):  Chris Curran, Danny Espinosa, Justin Maxwell

-  Derek Norris is top 5 in the Sally League in both walks and strikeouts.  His strikeouts (13) far exceed his walks (5) and could end up being a bigger problem than any one would have imagined.

-  Danny Espinosa is in the Carolina League's top 5 in OBP (.500)and OPS (1.033), he is also top 10 in SLG% (.533).  He is also third in the league in doubles.  Chris Marrero is in the top 5 for RBIs.

-  In the Eastern League, Edgardo Baez is in the top 10 for OBP, SLG%, and OPS.  Ian Desmond leads Harrisburg with a team high 9 strikeouts.

I couldn't make it last night, but will be there tomorrow for the day game.  If you get a chance sometime in the next few weeks, would you mind posting a pick of the replica ring.  I was curious to see what they look like....

Derek Norris just left the Hagerstown game with a left knee injury.  He couldn't even bend down and it looks like he might be out a week or two at the minimum.  He knocked in the game tying run too in the first inning with a double.
