Well, since we're talking about Belliard's glove, I suppose he makes a fair point.  Like I said, though, Belly would have to hit as well as Dunn for his bad D at 1B to be offset by the rest of his contributions.  Not happening.

It'a all good. I'm just freaking around. Belliard's stats as at first are misleading because he was in a platoon and killed lefties last year.

* Bowden said that Stephen Strasburg is as good a pitcher to enter the draft as baseball has seen in 10 or 15 years. He also said that, given the team's current draft board, it will probably select a college player with pick No. 10 (first round) as well.

Sweet. That's great news. Get a guy who is close and not some high-school kid.

Yeah, especially if it's a hitter.  I think Zimmerman was the last college hitter they took in the first two rounds.

I still don't see why we're so stuck on Dunn, when Sheets is really the high reward player that I think we need to take a risk on. It looks like Sheets is going to get less than 10m/yr possibly around that with bonuses. He pitched just under 200innings last year, and 140 the year before. Every single year over 100 innings. So even with injuries he's still pitching. I mean the guy has a career 3.72 ERA!!!! I know we think our rotation is set, but we have no idea how Zimm will do, and Balester scares me. If people think Dunn is worth 5 wins, I would think Sheets is worth 8 or so if he's healthy over a guy like Balester. Not to mention, a healthy sheets is worth way more than a healthy Dunn, for trade value. Too bad the lerners are focused on a guy like Glavine though...lol

since when? I've not heard of any serious interest on our part. all I've seen is "oh the Nats could be a good fit for *insert random player who isn't getting the money he wants from his team*"

is it confirmed that we are actually pursuing Glavine at all?

He [Stan Kasten] mentioned once, clearly, that he would appreciate some player additions before the season starts, but he said so by way of a caveat: "I don't know that the team will be much different between now and Opening Day -- but we all want it to be."

Get a plan B that doesn't involve the same old when healthy rejects and unproven "prospects" Nationals!

If there's smoke, there's a fire. If he's interested in us, you can bet that we've had informal talks with him. I didn't mean we're actively going hard after him, sorry, I just want the rumors to be about us and Sheets and not guys like Glavine.

Bowden said we would only get an oldster if it would not impede the progress of one of our younger players, specifically including Balester in that remark.  He said, if say we were replacing a journeyman at the bottom of the bullpen, no problem with that.

I took that to mean very little interest in Glavine.

Indians ftw!

I'm cool with Sheets though...

This rotation isn't half bad:

Sheets, Lannan, Olsen, Balester, Zimmermann.

Per Ladsun, the Nationals remain interested in Chad Cordero.

Quote
Nationals general manager Jim Bowden revealed at NatsFest on Sunday that the team still has interest in bringing back right-handed reliever Chad Cordero. The news came almost three months after Cordero was designated for assignment and became a free agent upon refusing to accept the assignment.

Cordero is still recovering from right shoulder surgery and throwing on flat ground. There is no word on when he will throw off a mound next, though assistant general manager Mike Rizzo has been in close contact with Cordero's agent, Larry Reynolds.

"He isn't ready -- health wise -- to throw at the level that he needs to, but certainly we are monitoring it," Bowden said of Cordero. "He is a special person and special talent."

yeah right.

If he has a shred of self respect, he'll work at WalMart before playing for us again after what Bowden did.

If is was chad I would tell bowden to go to hell. And if I was jimbo I would only sign him if he got his velocity back to what it used to be.

Ronnie Futbol is a terrible defender at any position.  His bat is decent, so he can be the 2nd or 3rd guy off the bench.  But having him start is akin to having Paulie Walnuts and Fat Johnny platooning.

Who would be the first guy off the bench?

Willie Harris?

For sure.  Or Kearns or Willingham, depending on which one of them wins the job.

More evidence of sportsfan losing his mind and joining forces or perhaps becoming AZ's padawan. Here he is defending Belliard to the point that he is convinced pimpjuice and ultimate Bazooka gum dispenser actually played 3 positions at the same time last season!   :pimp:

Part of the reason for that though is that the Nats had him playing like 3 different positions simulataneously (3B, 2B, 1B).

You took that a little too literal. But on a game to game basis last year he could be playing a plethora of different positions. It's gotta be hard to re-adjust constantly like that.

Which part, the part about Belliard playing all 3 positions at the same time or the part about you being AZ's padawan?

I bet AZ believes that pimpjuice can do it though.    :pimp:

Your post about me taking it too literal (plus the padawan comment) reminded me of a line in this movie though.

What would be really exciting for Nationals fans is if Washington could land the big left-handed bat they have been talking about all offseason. The name that comes up the most is free agent Adam Dunn, who just so happens to be a friend of Zimmerman.

"I know Adam real well and I've talked to him a few times. He's excited about his situation. Obviously it's a business and that stuff has to work itself out, but he loves it here and a lot of the guys on this team. He's told me he'd like to play here, but I'm sure he's told people in Milwaukee or whoever else is going after him that he'd like to play there to. That's all part of the game and the business, but hopefully one of them or both [second baseman Orlando Hudson] will be here. [Dunn] is a good guy and he knows how to play the game and he's a great baseball talent. We'll see what happens."

Even if the team doesn't sign anyone else, Zimmerman is happy with the moves that have already been made.

"I think they've shown this year that they are taking the next step and we're going to be in competition for those free agents. As players, it means something to us that the ownership is willing to put that much money on the table and it shows us that they're taking that step forward which is good for us. No one knows if they are done yet, but it would be nice to get a guy like Dunn or Hudson here. It would make our team better and that's the goal."
