either is fine with me.

I think the Brewers would be more prone to doing a deal than the Padres though.
That goes along with what I said earlier about trading Nick and Milledge. I was thinking for some pitching prospects, but they are both definitely trade bait.

who plays 3rd? Belliard?

I don't care, its not like Zimmerman puts up irreplaceable numbers. I'd rather have Milledge here long term

it's not like Milledge puts up irreplaceable numbers either. *shrug*

trading from a position that we don't have depth in, just to keep your favorite(who happens to play a position that we are more than sufficiently deep in) here is foolish.

we trade Milledge, we have suitable replacements for him in the outfield.

we don't have that at 3rd Base. get us another 3rd baseman, and then revisit trading Zimmerman.

so is overvaluing the golden boy, and its not like we have quality depth in the outfield, we just have depth.

That was stupid, trading Zimmerman just to trade him is a bad move. Who do we have? Who do we put there? Depth > Nothing.

I like Milledge, dont want to trade him, but if we could for Fielder/Gonzalez, be my guest.

Dukes and Willingham are better than Milledge.  Harris played better last year too.  Dunn or Bradley would be better if we sign one of them.

Bernadina and Maxwell *could* be decent OF'ers and Burgess is on track to be a productive corner OF'er.

How can you possibly compare our situations at third base to our outfield situation?  I can think of no one in our system who would be as good as Zimmerman.

Hell, I'm not even averse to trading Zimmerman, and I've been one of the more critical people here when it comes to golden boy, but saying that he's as expendable as Milledge is categorically false.

I'm not overvaluing anything.

I'm just saying that Zimmerman is really the ONLY 3rd baseman we have.

again, I'll ask you. if we trade Zimmerman, who plays 3rd?

but I suppose as long as Milledge stays it doesn't matter who plays the other positions, right?

maybe Milledge can play third.

I'm not against trading Zimmerman.  I just want to be sure that we have a replacement for him lined up.

do we?

We could always acquire Scott Rolen and at least get Bob Carpenter to buy all of his jerseys at the Nats team store. :?

Why would the Brewers want another corner outfieder- they already have Braun and Hart, and Milledge isn't exactly a great center fielder? His true position will probably end up being RF, but Hart is better right now. On the other hand, they don't really have a 3b, they have Gammel who is more of a 1b.

I know...I'm just not a big fan of his. He's a career minor leaguer.

Good point, but all this really does is illuminate the fact that the Brewers aren't a very good trade fit for us.

Unless the Brewers have some desire to trade Hart in order to get some pitching to fill the gaping holes left by Sabathia/Sheets.

then trade Dukes. he can play CF for them, and we still have a decent outfield.

regardless of how expendable Zimmerman is, we trade him and we've got NOTHING to take his place at 3rd.  I don't see what's so hard to understand about that.

it's not about "overrating the golden boy", it's about "who takes the golden boy's place when he's gone?"

And we don't have depth in the outfield. We have Dukes and Milledge who both could be good, though Dukes could easily turn into another NJ at this point. We have Willingham who is a serviceable major leaguer. Do we have any other outfielders who would even be a number 4 for a decent team?

Totally.  It was a running joke during Zimmerman's rookie season.  Bob would heap lavish praises upon Zimmerman in his typical, homer-like fashion, but he'd always qualify his statements by letting us all know that Rolen was still better.

"Zimmerman's a great young third baseman.  He's one of the best in the game already...and you know, maybe some day he'll be better than Scott Rolen."
