I pretty much tune out whenever I read stuff like that.

I had an idea earlier.  If we were to sign both Orlando Hudson and a big bat, I wonder if we could trade the A's a package of big leaguers for some quality prospects.  I'm talking elite, ML-ready pitchers.

We could package up Milledge, Nick Johnson, and Guzman (if they don't sign Furcal) and trade them away for a really good return.  It sounds crazy at first because Guzman and Milledge are two of our starters, but I really think we could make do without them.  We could use this as a real open audition for Alberto Gonzalez and Anderson Hernandez.  Neither of them are offensively that good, but most SS's are bad at the plate, anyway.  If they're both as good as reputed, defensively, they could give us one of the best infields in baseball.

With the glut of outfielders we might end up having, if we sign Dunn and/or Bradley, Milledge is starting to become somewhat expendable.

what would be worth getting from them with a package like that?

James Simmons, Brett Anderson, and Trevor Cahill

I doubt we get them to part with Cahill, but if we could I would go for it even with my hatred of pitchers

Heh.  My post wasn't contingent on that, though.

(This is what I get for recently reading a blog post on the Braves' situation with Furcal when it was weeks old.)

We have no chance of getting either of those guys.  Our entire organization is too thin.

But this is offseason - it's fantasyland!  We can pretend that anything can happen.  We can even pretend that Lastings Milledge is going to become an above average ML player!

Yeah leading the team in homers, stolen bases and rbis while missing a month of action all at the age of 22/23 and playing CF for the first time ... pretty good.  Especially with it being in this line-up and he ranked 1st in the NL in AVG, RBI and SB in his age group (over Bruce, Upton, DeWitt, Stewart)

Nice try though.  Continue to bash Milledge even though he's a youngster and has already shown flashes of being a good player for years to come.

Hey, but maybe we can trade him for Furcal?  He still play for the Braves, right? 8)

  Some people are just enamored with everything the A's do. I guess Billy Beane and those WS rings speak for themselves.

That's a very good point tomterp. However, that can be said about other organizations' modest accomplishments when compared to ours. But there seems to be an obsession with everything Billy Beane does.

The offensive juggernaut that is the A's outscored the Nationals by 5 runs.

NOTE: Those are the superior AL runs NOT the inferior NL runs.

Here's a blogger who suggests we should use the Teixeira money to sign SP Chuck James and a couple of relievers, and use the rest on Stephen Strasburg. Unfortunately, he thinks we shouldn't get O-Dog because he thinks we still have Bonifacio. :|

They were ranked 30th in hitting last season, dead last (The Nats were 26th). Their team average was .242 to Washington's .251, of course we all know BA doesn't count it's OBP that counts.   I think their team OBP was .314 while ours was .317, I could be wrong on those numbers though. crap OPS was .696 to .687 in our favor. They did pitch better than us though.

Cust will do that to an average - Dunn will do the same to us if we get him

They did connect on 8 more homers.  :?  But I doubt Beane disciples would have an issue with Dunn considering his OBP.

Spidey, you seem to have an awfully odd, troublesome problem with Billy Beane and the fact that he receives any praise considering you randomly brought him up when nobody here was really "worshipping" him.

Sit down - tell us about your problems.

But who said anything about worshiping Beane? Don't worry, it was probably just a Freudian slip on your part.

Okay, you said "obsession."  Potato - puh-tah-to

I have no idea if Billy Beane scouted/decided to draft Trevor Cahill, and it means not a damn thing to me.

James is out for all of 2009 due to a rotator cuff surgery.
I'd take him over Colome

Yeah he's a whopping idiot who thought it wise to throw a few million at an injured LEFTY and some random bullpen guys and that we'd be all fixed

Also, Draft picks don't come from the same pot of money.
I doubt we get Strasburg for 6.5 million either. I'm thinking 8-9 million plus a guaranteed ML contract. Boras knows he has us over a barrel, after last years Crow fiasco.

I can't wait until Opening Day (roughly 13 weeks away) so we can end all this speculation and just root for the Nats.

Agreed. I usually enjoy the off season and it's banter, but this year has been a little rough.
