Teixeira: Keeping his options open?
Free-agent left-hander CC Sabathia negotiated the right to void his seven-year, $161 million contract with the Yankees after three years. Teixeira is almost certain to secure a similar escape clause, particularly if he signs with a lesser club such as the Nationals.

Opt-out clauses almost always work to the player's advantage, and Teixeira's would be no different. If, for example, he negotiated the right to leave after three years, the Nationals would face a deadline to become a contender. And even if they fulfilled that goal, Teixeira still could become a free agent at 31.

One other thing about the possibility of Mr. Teixeira going to Washington: While Orioles fans would howl over losing a favorite son — Teixeira grew up in Severna Park, Md., — the Baltimore franchise actually would benefit in two ways.

First, Teixeira would move to the National League rather than play for the Red Sox or Yankees against the Orioles in the AL East. Second, the Orioles own a huge percentage of in the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network, which televises both the Orioles and Nationals.

Ken Rosenthal also says we have had interest in Milton Bradley (please no) and we're hot on Adam Dunn, but other teams will be soon too.

Damn, the Nats up against the "powerhouses" (if you really want to call them that). It's like the hobbit against the trolls!

Didn't the hobbit eventually win though?

Please, please let him be wrong about Bradley. We definately can do better than that.

Mel Antonen - USA Today.  He was giving great Nats commentary between 3:00 and 6:00 yesterday.  They spent a ton of time on the Nats yesterday.  They even devoted an entire our of debating who would benefit more from getting Tex - Washington or Baltimore?  A great hour of radio.

Do the Nats really lose draft picks if they get Teix?

yes. we'd lose our 2nd Round pick.

The Yankees are closing in on a stunning deal for free agent Mark Teixeira, CBSSports.com has learned.

The deal is close but not done, according to sources.

Earlier today, it appeared that Teixeira would decide between the Red Sox and Nationals.

We get 2 1st round picks, actually 2 top 10 picks.

I don't see the issue with losing a 2nd round pick

WTF could we do to compete with this? Then we have to start over with the Cubs for Dunn? Let's pull a couple blockbuster trades instead. Marrero, Burgess, young pitcher for a top 1B.

That would be the final straw. It would make a salary cap in baseball a necessity. No freaking way should any team be able to sign Burnett, Sabathia, and Teixeira in one off-season.

Yep. Teixeira agrees to deal with NY Yankees. So they weren't bullcrapting all along. This is what he wanted and we were just being used.

I don't get all the hate though. They spend money to improve their team. That's the goal and I don't see anything wrong with that. They aren't breaking any rules or cheating.

They have to be running into the FA quota:
http://mlb.mlb.com/pa/pdf/cba_english.pdf#page86

3 or 4 is the limit. CC, Burnett, Tex - that's 3. That's the limit unless there are more than 62 Type and B's.
