we can beat that offer.  8 years 164ish for starters.

Now that a number has been leaked the Lerners will make a "serious' offer of 8/148 to show they are "willing" to spend and pacify the doubters.

The only think I worry about is no team has one it all with one player making over 15% of the team's payroll. (at least that was true up to a few years ago and I can't think of a team that won in the past few years to change that) If we get him and increase our payroll to match great; if we get him and use that as an excuse to trade away rather than resign guys in arbitration (Zimmerman particullarly) then I'd rather get someone cheaper.

This is true but after the '09 season, the Nats lose $18.5M in salaries from Johnson,Young and Kearns. So front load the contract for the first three years, then back it down over the remaing 7. That way you aren't interfering with signing "homegrown" talent, Zimmerman,Lannan, etc...

So when the mortgage industry collapses a real estate baron is exempt? What are you, a wiseguy?

There's nobody feeling like spending a lot of money these days.  Real estate is getting hammered just like everything else.  All investments aside from T-Bills are declining in value.

The Lerners have probably lost more money in the last three months than all of us combined will earn in our lifetimes. And it's stupid to say they have money, when you don't know how the corporate Nationals are structured.

Don't forget, I'm still waiting for my explanation on how you know the Nationals have a separate budget for minor league signings vs. major league salaries.  No butting in the response line.

How many major league teams are registered as a company in another state? I can see it now: "Chicago Cubs Inc. Des Moines, IA"

haha okay i'll get to that first when i'm free but i read it somewhere they do a while back and from baseball people i have talked to it was of my understanding that they generally do have seperate budgets/or they don't let free agent signings affect their draft picking spending.

My guess is that every team is registered in Deleware or Nevada for financial reasons

It would be stupid and unprofessional of them not to have at least an idea of how much money they allocate for spending at each level of signings (FA, draft, international players).

I think I read that a while back also hammonds. But then again, I suppose tomterp can provide personal emails from Kasten to prove that we read no such thing.
