maybe the nats have made an offer and tex is considering accepting it, and boras wants to try to get the yankees to come in at the last minute and drive the price up, hopefully enough so that tex changes his mind

/end optimism

I think he was just trolling for business.  Don't forget he's got a slew of other clients, including Manny, that might interest the Yankees.  But yeah, acting like the Yankees are bidding might be a negotiating ploy.

You are all welcome.

Once Teixiera doesn't sign with us, I will blame this post.

Y'all excuse my ignorance, but who is Clint?  I'm guessing that he's the PA announcer.

Clint is the much beloved fellow  who slinks around Nats Park and conducts all the little games for prizes. He reminds me of a better looking Pee Wee Herman on steroids.

Boras was meeting with Lerner, and Teixeira was visiting his family.  I haven't seen thus far where Tex met with the Nats directly, but it may well have happened.

I'd hope the Nationals were trying to build some type of relationship with Boras. Lay the ground work for next years draft and not have a repeat of the Crow situation.

As long as Stras (or whoever) isn't an ignorant prick, we should be okay.

by definition, taking a pitcher number 1 overall is a dumb pick (look at the history of number 1 overalls)

Price did pretty well in the playoffs last year. I think he's the real deal. I don't care what history says you should or shouldn't pick. You still need to take the best overall player.

As per MLBTR.com:
Quote
Some rival agents...believe that Boras might be offering [Jason] Varitek in a "package deal" with the catcher's friend and fellow Georgia Tech alum, free-agent first baseman Mark Teixeira. The Red Sox are pursuing Teixeira, and the Nationals are among the other teams that might have interest in both players.

Jason Varitek? First I've heard of this.

Why is that? Varitek is above playing for a bad team like us so I don't think he'd go here. He's awful anyways at this point in his career and is no more than a back-up catcher.

But if we did (for some stupid reason) sign him, I'm sure you would be pissed off.

Just because it would be a stupid move. He wouldn't start here anyways. Nieves and Montz are both better and more affordable options.

But if they signed him and declared him our starter or said he would platoon with Flores you would undoubtedly probably lose your composure over it.

He's still a very good catcher.  He's just doesn't provide much at the plate anymore.  If we have to put up with Varitek for a couple of years to land Tex, I think it's a pretty easy decision to make.

Remember when Lieberthal retired rather than playing in DC as a backup? Ain't gonna happen.

If Varitek is such a good defensive catcher, why didn't he catch Wakefield?

Because he's not a perfect catcher.  It's one of the few holes in his game, but frankly, there aren't many catchers out there who are good it catching for a knuckleballers.  It's as niche of a skill as throwing one is.  Being a good catcher is more than just keeping balls from getting to the backstop.  And by and large, he still does many of those things very well.  His offensive stats are virtually the same as Flores' but is better defensively.  I've always been one to think that someone like that can really help a young player like Flores as he continues to develop.  He'd also, I think help with a young pitching staff.  He demands instant credibility and gives those pitchers confidence.  One thing he also does is lend credibility to the organization with the fans.  Most fans are going to recognize his name.  IMO, I'd say the positives outweight the negatives assuming it'd only be for a couple of years.
