No that was the second inning in which Belliard also had an error. But those led to an inning ending DP and no runs were yielded. You just misremembered.

Nah ... I'm just having an aneurysm or something ... my brain is mush

Well the Nats took a figurative dump on Lannan again today, giving him no support and another loss. WHY HIM??

Another excellent outing by Lannan ... never mind how bitter I am that he had mauer frickin STRUCK OUT <stupid ump> and that he should have won this game 1-0 -- --he's been outstanding ... it's really a shame the lack of run support he gets and after all the hits they got in Seattle -- you'd think they could put some runs on the board tonight -- sigh, heavy, heavy sigh ... Keep your head up John ... the Nats are bound to score some runs for you sooner or later <pray>

OT: That must be the craptiest ballpark in baseball, perhaps excepting Tropicana.

But, yeah, Lannan got robbed.  And I still miss Livo.  He looks like he's playing catch at a BBQ...my paperboy has a bigger windup.

A little love for John Lannan -- not only did he pitch very well tonight -- but he also fielded his position very well tonight too ... AND the Nats actually put up some runs -- whatta ya know about that!

Good job John!

John Lannan FINALLY gets his 5th win.
Anyone else think he looks like a Silent Film era star?

I am sure it will probably be one of the two rookie Cubs that are All-Star starters, Soto or Fukodome.

Honestly, all it takes is a Soto slump or a couple Volquez duds for Lannan's name to be heard in whispers around baseballland.
But honestly, I think whispers is all we'll hear.

The problem is Lannan doesn't get nearly the run support needed and even if he has comparable numbers in era, whip, etc.  to other good rookie pitchers (Volquez), he will have a glaring W-L record that will keep him from getting serious consideration. Plus playing on the awful nationals this year doesn't help, none the less he's having a great season and I look forward to him helping anchor the rotation for years to come.

Lannan is now 29th in VORP among all major league pitchers.  By this statistical measure, he's a #1 starter.

...Who gets the worst run support in the majors. Imagine if he got 3-4 runs a game to work with. He'd be like 10-3 and probably an All-Star.

I don't think Volquez is a rookie,he pitched 80 innings for the Rangers. Jair Jurrjens,Hiroki Kuroda and Kosuke Fukudome are all classified as rookies.

Manny, no more of this rookie confidence building, pull him while he's winning BS. Let him pitch a 120 pitch CG. Now THAT will really build his confidence. And save the bullpen.

Here are the rankings of all 185 pitchers with more than 5 starts this season, ranked by VORP.

If you stratify each group of 30 into a starter tier, we have

Lannan #1
Perez and Redding #3
Bergmann #4

Then,
Chico and Hill below #5.

Clippard, Mock and Balester don't have meaningful sample sizes, though Clippard and Balester are slightly positive, Mock slightly negative VORP.

Lannan,Bergmann,& Balester get pulled earlier than normal because they are god awful hitters. Bergmann is especially bad. He hasn't done anything positive when batting. No sac bunts no walks no nothing. They need to get Tolman or Rick Aponte to work with these guys so they can at least bunt.

For the love of God, can we really be destroying our bullpen over bunts? Maybe Manny should be fired. I'm serious. This has been a problem since '05. Last night, with a 5-0 lead, they could have stretched Lannan out a bit.

Er, I wish to remind you that the reason they were up 5-0, is BECAUSE Flores pinch hit for Lannan.  Else, the game's still 2-0.
