typically, Gutierrez is way down the 3d base line so it is possible Gallo picked him up.

You can see in the replay how Gallo would have thought Ricky was holding HIM...terrible coaching...

Except he got back to third safely and than inexplicablely decided to vacate the base.

And by the way, the Yankees butchered the play as well.  They were trying to let us off the hook.  I guess in their defense, they have probably never prepared and practiced for such a ridiculous baserunning display.

wait - Judge to the shortstop who relays a throw home, OK. Was the next throw to 1st rather than 3rd? Was the catcher driving Gallo back to 3rd then throwing to the first baseman who then threw back to the catcher? That's not how a run down goes. Looks like the 3 and 5 are reversed.
Edit - watched it again. I guess the 1st baseman took the 1st throw to second, which got Gallo to vacate 3d and got the throw back to the catcher and then to the 3rd baseman for the tag. After that, he looks up and throws behind the runner to the 2nd baseman who was covering 1st and who makes the tag (because by that time, Yepez was back at 2nd and Tena had nowhere to advance.

Curious why the 1st baseman was the first option at 2nd and not Gleyber? I'm guessing they don't practice this play often.

Edit again - so Gleyber initially was out by the SS when he made the cutoff, so the 1B trailed Tena towards second and was closer to the bag. Gleyber went past second and I guess went to cover 1st eventually when Tena started to return to 1st.

Only Nook Logan can feel relief about it because What Was He Thinking? now is superseded in our memory ]

No it isn't...   ;) (and, of course, CS produced one of the great moments of commentary...).

Strangely enough, 'nats.com' makes no mention of this incident. Isn't that unusual?... :hysterical:   ;)

Jim Hickey appeared to have had some words with Gutierrez after the game:

I hope Hickey was chastising him, but the conversation was more likely about dinner reservations.

Yeah, doesn't look like he's that angry.  And why would he be?  Just one mediocre coach talking to another.

https://blogs.fangraphs.com/five-things-i-liked-or-didnt-like-this-week-august-30/

Dissects this play. shows the Gutierrez hold of Yepez that Gallo sees and thinks is for him. Focus is on Yepez not staying at 3rd and retreating towards an occupied 2d base enabling the second out. 5 videos embedded on this play.

Also discusses Volpe's game 1. Crews should have had him on the play at the plate.

Anyone found Charlie's commentary for this?  I assume it isn't as memorable as 'Where..', as MLB didn't use it on the highlights reel...

Probably asking him what quarter it was.
