Did we ever learn why Davey had Crews hitting in the 2 hole during spring training, and then dropped him to 7th on opening day?
probably because the plan going in was to have a righty follow Abrams then hit Wood 3rd. Davey's usually into alternating left right left. Crews projected to be the best righty regular. Not Young, DeJong, or the switches. It's just that, after Crews's poor start, they tried Wood, and he thrived there against all pitching.

My guess is how poorly Crews played

From Ben Clemens chat:
Quote
2:32
Petey Bienel: How long of a leash does Dylan Crews have this season? I suppose the Nats aren’t in a position to replace him with somebody, but his Ks are pretty worrisome after trending better much of April. Was he forced to the majors just to chase RotY? His AAA numbers didn’t scream call me up.
2:32
Ben Clemens: I’d give him the longest leash imaginable
2:32
Ben Clemens: what are they losing by trying him out in the bigs?
2:33
Ben Clemens: honestly the biggest problem he has is passivity, imo
2:33
Ben Clemens: so figure it out against big leaguers

Agree 100% with Clemens. Dylan isn't going anywhere and there's nothing to gain by sending him back to Rochester.

Sounds like he's probably headed to the IL with Robert Hassell III waiting in the wings: https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2025/05/20/dylan-crews-injury-nationals-braves/
