Give Davey a bat at 1B/DH and a top of the rotation starter next year. If he can't get us to the playoffs with that, plus the stud kids, then he deserves to go.

I don’t foresee large additions while the team is for sale

Is the team still for sale?

I think the situation is bleaker. I think the Lerners are going to hold on until the value rises. Which means they are planning on operating on a shoe string budget for years

And you're smoking something you bought on the other side of South Capitol Street if you think this team will be better than the Mets, Phillies, or Braves next year.

Maybe I will venture over and have a smoke or two, but I didn't say they will be better than the Mets, Phillies or Braves. You can add the Dodgers in there also. The Mets spend like a drunken sailor, the Braves have made a few smart decisions like locking up Acuna and the Phillies and Dodgers make substantially more TV money than the Nats. But with the addition of a solid pitcher to go with the young promising pitchers who have emerged this year and a batter who can trot around the bases they should be able to compete. We found out last year and in 2019 all you need is a ticket to the dance and anything can happen.

But with the addition of a solid pitcher to go with the young promising pitchers who have emerged this year

Not enough.  And the promise of those young pitchers has been eroding quickly.

On June 1, this team was 5th best in the NL in Runs Against with 241.  Today it's 3rd worst at 588.

First issue is defense, the team is 27th of 30 in MLB in defensive runs saved and would be 29th without Jacob Young.   The carelessness and lack of situational awareness is a coaching issue, one that no one will be held accountable for now.   A good rebuild starts with these kinds of fundamentals because they're far cheaper to acquire than power bats or pitchers, yet that foundation is simply not in place here.

Second issue is innings per start have dropped from 5.5 before July 1, to 4.8 since then.  This is partially the result of wear and tear on the arms but more so the next issue...

They've made no adjustments to being scouted.  Mitchell Parker had a 7.89 ERA in July, followed by a 5.28 ERA so far in August.  The league has figured him out and he's given up 8 HRs in just 37 IP since July 1.  Jake Irvin had a 4.75 ERA in July, followed by 5.94 ERA in August, also giving up an insane number of HRs like Parker.

Next, MacKenzie Gore has not been an MLB level pitcher since July 1, walking 24 batters in 33 innings, averaging close to 20 pitches per inning, most in MLB, and averaging 4.4 innings per start during that time.

Then there's Corbin.

Only DJ Herz has improved, but he was getting rocked earlier in the season so there was less for scouts to adjust to.  Moreover, he's averaged under 5 innings per start because they've been keeping him on a low pitch count.

The result has been a soaring team ERA and an overworked bullpen.

So how do you improve defense?  Situational awareness?  Adjusting approach so you can pitch well for 30 starts, not 10?  Adjusting to the adjustments other teams have made against you?  Not just by signing free agents, but hiring good coaches and a manager who know how to address this.  The Nats don't have any of that, and won't next season.

He deserves to go now.   But deserving to go or to stay doesn't matter on South Capitol Street.  Politicking well within the team's dysfunctional culture does, and is why all the inept coaches plus their manager will be back next year.

At the start of the year Irvin, Parker and Herz certainly weren't expected to give the Nats the effective pitching they have. The fact they're not used to being in the rotation for an entire season could explain any regression they experience. On last nights Orioles/Red Sox telecast the Orioles announcers were saying how impressed they were with the Nats pitching. Palmer pointed out how impressed he was with Herz especially. He liked his stuff.

Of Irvin's and Parkers last 5 starts 3 were good allowing 2 runs or less.

Of DJ Herz last 5 starts he's allowed 2 runs or less although 1 wasn't a good start as he only pitched 2.2 innings.

Nobody saw this coming. Gore needs to be fixed though. He's got the stuff but isn't getting the results.

Their numbers since July 1 are not good.  Irvin ended June with a 3.03 ERA, his ERA in July was 4.75, August is 5.91.  Parker has also been getting hammered over this same time period.  Gore has been awful, Corbin worse.  Doo can only do so much and Hickey is not fixing anyone, and that includes into next season now.

Like I said above they are still having good games but the inflated ERA probably has more to do with a blow up game here or there. As they get more experience that will probably happen less. They've shown they have the stuff to get guys out though.

In Parker's case the blow ups are becoming too frequent, he's had 4 games with more than 5 earned runs in his last 8 starts.  There's so much data out there now with Statcast and all the analytics, and it looks like he's been figured out.  Have to make adjustments which just hasn't happened yet.

Nusbaum's game story noted he's having less success high in the strike zone than earlier.

Not long ago, Parker lived comfortably in the top of the zone. But since mid-June, the scouting reports may have caught up to the 24-year-old left-hander. Thursday’s start included a homer from Alec Bohm in the first inning, a three-run shot that came on a 93-mph above-the-belt pitch but over the plate. Two pitches later, Parker tried a high splitter in about the same location, and Nick Castellanos sent it 380 feet out to left.

Kevin Frandsen mentioned Parker was getting too much of the plate. As the hitters adjust so too must the pitchers. Hopefully this year will be an overall good experience and next year they'll be dialed in as they have been for most of this year.

Another area they've been scouted is stolen bases.  On June 1, they were ninth in MLB with an 81.6% success rate.  Now they're 27th at 74.2%.  They simply don't make adjustments and that's on the coaches.

How Davey managed to turn around 2019 will be a future episode of unsolved mysteries. One of this nations biggest head scratchers right below DB Cooper. Fine with Davey coming back one more season but he’s just a placeholder and won’t be here to lead the way with the new era. Hopefully we get a change in ownership soon and hopefully it isn’t that ass clown Leonsis.

I have no clue why so many local fans hate Leonsis? Is he my favorite? No. He does, however, keep his homegrown stars for the most part and he puts money into his teams. Is he my ideal choice for owner? Also no but I think the hatred for him is a bit over the top.

I think some of it is because he comes across as a bit creepy...not the kind of guy you'd like to spend a lot of time with at a cocktail party...

He kept McPhee for way too long and should’ve had more postseason success with the amount of talent on that Caps golden age. He never really addressed getting a shut down defenseman either earlier on during the Caps “success.” He fought a fan after they heckled him. Doesn’t give a shi about the Wizards, kept Ernie around way too long. Continued lazy hiring. I could go on. And then the cherry on top was he tried to get out of DC and take the Wiz and Caps to Northern Virginia. Guy is a complete slimeball and is lucky he can ride on the coat tails of a generational player like Ovechkin. Honestly would’ve taken Snyder as an “owner” over Ted for the Caps and Wiz. Snyder was an idiot and more of a scumbag than Leonsis but money was never an issue for him. Ask Wizards fans about Leonsis and see the answer you get. Most Caps fans are Johnny come lately bandwagoners anyway and content with just being good enough.

China Town is a crime-riddled mess and he tried to move them like 5 miles away to Potomac Yard. The backlash over that is just ridiculous.

I am a Wizards fan. There's like 4 of us left. The idea he doesn't give a shi about the wizards is just stupid. He's handed out multiple max contracts. NOBODY WILL SIGN WITH THE WIZARDS. They literally signed nobody for like three years gearing up to have a shot at KD and he just "no thank you" and this was with a team that made a playoff run with a young Beal, Wall and Porter. Until Wizards fans realize nobody wants to come here and the only way the team can win is by getting lucky in the draft they'll keep thinking its on Ted. The team has sucked since the 70s. They sucked when Pollin had the team and let Unseld trade away the Wallaces and Webber. They sucked when Pollin let Jordan destroy the roster and trade Rip for Mitch. I get being annoyed with Grunfeld and he was held onto for way too long but the most success this team has had since the last title team 50 years ago was under Ernie.

Ted is a douche. Nearly every owner of a sports team on the planet is but saying you'd take Snyder of Leonsis is just stupid. Sorry. I've been a Redskins fan my entire 39 years on this earth and Snyder was the single worst sports franchise owner in all of sports. He was a cancerous disaster that destroyed anything good that came along.

It appears they sure didn't get lucky with this past draft. This number 2 overall pick sure hasn't impressed so far to say the least.

He is way too slow to make organizational changes. He always seems satisfied with simply being close to the playoffs, if not getting in them.

Oh and now he's in bed with the Saudis so its even more scummy. Leonsis isn't some cureall for our ownership issue. Long term he probably makes it worse. I would expect him to let Rizzo go after 2-4 years of middling success and increased payroll. He'll then hire someone who won't be as good and then we become the Wizards of baseball.

No one comes here because the team sucks. The team sucks because Leonsis makes poor upper management decisions with no accountability. And he genuinely doesn't care about results.

The team nearly made the ECF with Wall, Beal and Porter and still nobody would sign here. They were beating Boston with like 5 minutes to go in game 7 when the refs took over lol. They were young and talented. Still nobody would come. I'm not sure how you solve that problem or pin it on Ted?

That was years ago. It was a blip. They were barely .500 before and completely spiraled after. No one wanted to go there because the organization sucks. Players don't care about crime at the stadium. They care about management making good basketball decisions. And Leonsis never brings in good basketball management.

He should have been more like Danny Snyder and make constant organization changes. Sure worked for the football team.

Ted made a bad decision keeping Ernie too long and then hiring his protege. Time will tell on the current group. Need to tank for a few years to better the odds. Lagg for Flagg.
