Status quo is what we do.  Owners looking to sell = same GM, same manager, same coaches.  I don't hate it either but it would be interesting to see what fresh faces and new perspectives would yield.

Do we really think this team has significantly underperformed its talent?
100%. Playing the contract has led Corbin and Keibert dragging the team down.  The Hickey Shuffle has been offset by Doo, but has led to Gore taking a terrible approach by nibbling and leading MLB in pitches per inning…by a lot.  The baserunning carelessness and weak defense outside of Jacob Young has all made it worse.  This team was playing around .500 but failed to make adjustments to glaring weaknesses.  12 of 15 NL teams are within 5/6 games of a playoff spot.  This team has the personnel to be in the low tier of contenders, but has neither the coaches nor the culture.

I can see and understand the argument for being the staff back after this season. But looking at it as a fifth straight losing season? Yuck.

The team is 1 game under .500 in games Corbin doesn't pitch.  That seems roughly in line with the talent level.  I don't think the coaching is overall doing much overall, but if the solution is "eh, these guys are ok, get more talent" then one could do worse.

I'm fine with this decision. The continuity will help these young players in their continuing development.

IMO, two guys need to go. Hickey and Coles. I think an inanimate object is about as useful as those two.

lol, hopefully they sign some free agents this Winter, otherwise looks like it'll be another tanking season in '25.

The team could have 84-86 win talent but actually win just 77-78 games.  These guys will make sure that happens.

We’re not last. I guess that’s success that has to be rewarded?

Looking through Doolittle’s minor league hitting records, I’m pretty sure he’d be an upgrade over Coles.

This team has turned into an accident that you see on the freeway, and you just can't turn away.

Team is 13th of 15 in the NL, no other team in this position would do this with 40 games left.  Davey probably lobbied Rizzo for this, Mini Me signed off on it, with the reasoning that Rizzo's PR cover and Davey's personal relationships are more important than winning.   We should no longer compare this franchise to the Pirates, Pittsburgh is a machine compared to this disaster.

This offseason is still when the ultimate test of whether ownership cares to try and compete again will happen, but this definitely lowers my confidence that they will. Certainly no reason to do this with so much of the season still left.

What sensible free agent will want to come here?  When an organization focuses more on internal politics than results, it repulses good people.   I’d rather be the guy who sweeps the floor at the Farragut North Metro station than work for the Lerners.

It seems the plan is about where they expected/hoped it to be right about now. The minor league system is among the highest rated. A couple young players are keepers, middle infield, left and center. A couple minor leaguers are promising and a few young pitchers have had surprising results this year. Sign a pitcher this off-season and a bat that can hit home runs and the front office and coaching staff will have the Nats back into contention next year. We'll see if that happens.

It is, because "the plan" was to spend as little as possible for as long as possible, and to use the GM as a shield against criticism for doing so.  Winning and taking pride in the product is not part of any plan with this org.  This is not 2011/12 when they finally got rid of the bargain bin managers, brought in Davey Johnson, and drafted and developed successfully.  Davey was a bargain bin replacement for Dusty Baker, who they didn't want to pay, and has politicked his way into getting his unqualified coaches tenures they haven't earned.  Rizzo has also figured out that keeping his job requires politicking, not winning, so he needs a steady stream of has beens and never weres he can try to flip at the deadline to make up for awful drafting.  The dumpster fire on South Capitol Street will not be put out anytime soon.  And you're smoking something you bought on the other side of South Capitol Street if you think this team will be better than the Mets, Phillies, or Braves next year.

This is where I'm at. It's time. It wont take much added for me to be convinced this roster is ready to be on the right side of .500.

Martinez returning doesn't tell me much about their plans. He was hired as a "win now" manager in 2018 and showed in 2019 when he had the tools he can get in the playoffs and win it all. I don't think he is a "great" manager, but he isn't holding the team back. If anything, his return makes me think it's a bit more likely for them to try to "add" as it would make no sense to fire him and bring in another manager to slog through another consecutive mailing it in offseason.

Give Davey a bat at 1B/DH and a top of the rotation starter next year. If he can't get us to the playoffs with that, plus the stud kids, then he deserves to go.
