I'd really like to know what is going on with Cavalli. Light rehabs? Sounds more like reinjury or a botched surgery.

Yes, very strange.  I get more upset about things like the lack of communication on this more than Rizzon trying to paint a less bleak picture than reality in general.

Cavalli is kind of a lynchpin in offseason planning.

Is he though? At most, he's the number 5 starter next year. He's probably capped on innings. They get a decent starter in free agency and Cavalli is probably starting next year in Rochester

Don't see that at all.  Brad Lord or Tyler Stuart are in line to take Corbin's spot.

Cavalli is the only one of those 3 who has top of the rotation stuff. Stuart is 2 pitches, and Lord is over performing already

innings limits, late start of the season,  sure,  but in terms of stuff, figuring out what we have in him is key. I think everyone thought he was a high end starter or at worst a dominant reliever coming into the year, so figuring out his next few years is key to roster structure, trades and spending

But we have no idea if he's going to pitch. So he cant be a lynchpin

"Stuff" meaning velocity?  Turns 27 next year and is setting up to be another draft bust.  Stuart and Lord can be consistent starters with good control and reasonable pitch counts, not unlike Irvin or Parker on a good day.  There is no Stras or Max anywhere in the org now, but this concept of chasing athletic pitchers with "stuff" has led to the series of busted first rounders, meanwhile Irvin, Parker, and Herz are all 4th rounders or later who look like they can be part of the rotation for the next few seasons at least.   You can also learn new pitches, Josiah Gray has a much broader arsenal than he did when he came up.

lynchpin is the wrong word, but I think a lot of offseason decisions pivot around him. Do we need to sign Flaherty or better? I might have said no if I had as much confidence in Cavalli at the end of this year as I had going into it

stuff meaning best fastball and curve in the organization per mlb.com.

I have a feeling you are right and he is not going to pitch much in the majors. I would not have said that inMarch before the rehab problems

If a lot of offseason decisions depend on him, then Rizzo plans for him to not pitch next season.

The team needs a 1/2 from free agency. Cavalli aint going to be it, even if he's healthy. Best case scenario, he slots into the 5 spot, but realistically, they're going to start him in the minors. He can stay down there for a while.

Williams threw 59 pitches at PNC Park on Thursday as he continues to ramp up for a return by the end of the season. Manager Dave Martinez said that if Williams responds well to that work, the next step for Williams would likely be a rehab assignment with Double-A Harrisburg or Triple-A Rochester.

aim is to push him up to 75 or 80 pitches and get a rehab start in AA or AAA, then bring him back for a couple of starts at the end of the year in a 6 man rotation, per Davey.

I can't imagine any of that revolves around Cavalli.  Cavalli has one major league appearance under his belt, he's 26, and by the time Opening Day rolls around he'll be more than two years post-TJ surgery with no healthy period in there.

You can't rely in any way on a dude who's been out for two years, has aged out of being a true prospect, and has never actually proven he can get major league hitters out.  If you get anything at all out of him, even from the bullpen, it's a win at this point.

Encouraging. I hope he gets a start for the Nats before the season ends. I hope they sign him to a team friendly one year contract for next year and see if he can duplicate what he did this year before he got hurt.

Zuck says he’ll start Sunday for Harrisburg and then rejoin the rotation assuming no setbacks.

this would be so great. His injury is worrisome, so having him shake it off and stay viable is great for him. I am not sure I'd be happy with Irvin / Gore / Parker / Herz / Williams as the projected rotation - I think they need a 1 or 2 more than a 4 or 5 - but I think he'd be a nice long reliever / 6th starter / placeholder until Lord / Lara / Sykora / Susana / Cavalli are ready.
