0-3 with 2Ks. Gonna fit in great here

1-4 with a nice line-drive single

bunch of righties this series. I could see them giving Thomas a few more ABs in AAA and keeping Robles around until Monday since he'll just be backing up Rosario and Winker in the OF. Keep the standard lineup against righties with Meneses DH and Gallo 1st base. Not that it has had much success, but Thomas isn't going to touch Kirby / Gilbert / Woo.

Or keeping Thomas down for a few more games while promoting that lefty James Wood to replace Robles.

Thomas continues rehab in Harrisburg. With 3 righties scheduled for Seattle, it is unlikely that a righty platoon bat was going to see much action.

Vic survives the weekend.

Lane isn't a short-side platoon.  He is way better against lefties, but unless both Winker and Rosario are running hot, Lane will start plenty against righties once he's up.  Still, no reason to rush him up until the start of next week.

Lane of the first half of 2023 was not a platoon bat, but his April before his injury was as bad as Rosario's and that's saying something. There was a real chance to sell high back at the deadline. Ghost Mears at Talk Nats runs through Thomas's tough stretch since last August. Sounds like Aspenbubba who has been on this.

We say all the time that defense matters, and if you think the defense and offense will get better when Lane Thomas returns, think again. He left as a -0.3 WAR player and the worst defender on the team (on a per game basis) per Statcast’s OAA at a -3.0, and keep in mind that those stats are cumulative so by missing a month he might be a -6.0 now. We saw Thomas in a rehab start in Harrisburg last night do the same thing he had been doing for the Nats where he won’t aggressively charge balls. If not for his gun of an arm, he’d be unplayable with his poor defense, and .184 batting average and anemic .503 OPS. Going back to August 8th of last year forward through this season for Thomas, the numbers for those 68 games are not great. He batted a combined .205 with a .257 OBP a SLG of .363 and an OPS of .619. So Thomas is really in a long funk dating back to August of 2023. Of course he will get a chance to show he can be the Thomas of the mid-season of 2023 who looked like an All-Star.

There's a real hole in right. Too bad for Wood's hamstring. The extra rehab for Thomas might be a sign they've learned from rushing Ruiz and not giving Gallo more PAs in Rochester.

It seems like we can just stick Rosario in RF

really think that if Wood is healthy, the best lineup has him in right, Rosario, Thomas, and Winker splitting time in left and DH, with the Joeys at 1st and some DH too, unless one is cut.

We could dump the Joeys and put Winker at first, and put Rosario at DH.

May 24: RF Lane Thomas (left MCL strain) continues rehab assignment
Thomas went 1-for-4 on Thursday with the Double-A Senators. He played nine innings of the 10-inning game. Manager Dave Martinez said he is “a little sore, but he’s getting there.” The Nationals plan to re-evaluate the starting right fielder after this weekend.
https://www.mlb.com/nationals/news/nationals-injuries-and-roster-moves

Last night - 2 for 4 with a double and a walk as a DH.

I'd like to see him stay down until he's feeling normal. if that's longer than this weekend, it might mean a game or two of Robles against Fried and the ATL lefties, but I don't want Lane limping and trying to field

Gray still only throwing bullpens. At this point, Cavalli looks ahead of him. Ferrer throwing 120 feet at West Palm.

Lol, I forgot about Ferrer.

This actually could work out well for the Nats. They trade Williams, Floro, Harvey, Finnegan, and maybe Law at the deadline, and replace them with Parker, Ferrer, Brzykcy, Herz, Rutledge, and maybe Powell.

At some point, it's time to see if the kids are alright.

he needs to turn things around. Also, I don't mind older minor league relievers. Guys develop at different rates.

Lot of reporting here from Golden on the status of Gray and Cavalli.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2024/05/25/nationals-mariners-trevor-williams/

Gray threw 23 pitches off the mound (and, mentioned here [https://www.mlb.com/nationals/news/nationals-injuries-and-roster-moves], another 27 in the bullpen) yesterday, and is on a an every 5 day cycle for throwing to hitters as he gets recovers. Listening to Davey, the next step is for him to have some up and downs where he simulates innings while on the mound. Threw mostly hard stuff - fastball, cutter, slider  - plus change.

Cavalli threw 47 pitches over 4 IP in an intrasquad game. He's also on a 5 day cycle. Per the Nats injuries and roster moves link, he struck out 8 and averaged 95 on his fastball. No decisions yet on when he starts rehab starts in competitive minor league games.

Guessing Thomas will be activated for tomorrow's game given he's at the ballpark right now.

Young or Robles?

I think Davey said they had him hitting off a velocity machine (?) to see him against different stuff. Looking at how he is using his legs, which is kind of key given the meniscus injury.

Gotta be Robles. I think the day off today is in part because he's going to be playing a lot of games in a row after this.

If Thomas is not playing in Harrisburg, Davey might as well see him against MLB pitchers. Not just a machine.

Maybe against Atlanta?

What news about James Wood?

post-game, Davey said he'll be activated tomorrow. no discussion of what move will be made.

I guess it is DFA Robles or Nunez, or option Meneses to Rochester. They cannot send down Young.
