somebody around here predicted the terms - 3 years, $45 million, with a $15 million option for year 4. If that's a team option, then that's on the fringe of I might have offered, depending on how much the buyout adds.  If it ends up something like 3 years, $14 million, with a $15 million option or a $3 million buyout, then it is a nice deal for Candy. I've got to think the Nats got right up to the line, leading to the rumors the other night, but flinched. I can't blame them.

Really curious now about Yamamoto, Imanaga, and Montgomery. I think one ends up in NYY, but they are in the highest "Steve Cohen" luxury tax penalty area for 2024 already.  Somebody like Yamamoto is going to cost his $25 million salary, plus a posting fee, plus another $15 million in luxury taxes, for a guy who hasn't played in MLB. But do you go $18-$20 million that Montgomery is going to cost, plus a $12-13 million luxury tax when you thought he was only worth Harrison Bader last year?

Edit - I'm way low on the luxury tax estimates. See the next post.

Using Cot's current numbers, they estimate the NYY at ~$287 million for the CBT. The 3rd  threshold is $277 million, the highest threshold is at $297 million. They will be a 3rd time payer this year after resetting in 2021. 3rd time payer that crosses the 3rd threshold pays 95% (I think just on the amount over the 3rd threshold), and 110% over the 4th.

Using $287 million estimate, signing Yamamoto at $25 million would mean something like paying $9.5 million plus $16.5 million ($26 million) in taxes in addition to a posting fee paid to Yamamoto's NPB team. Assuming it's a $200 million contract, that's around $33 million (formula is 20% for 1st  $25 million, or $5 million, 17.5% for the next $25 million, or $4million and change, then 15% for the amount over $50 million). So, it's may be an additional $50 million or so on top of his salary to sign him, bringing the team to probably a $400 million in cash money out the door.

depends on the quality of the sushi. Does grayling and char make for good sushi?

Why would he want to pay Canadian taxes?  Just a ploy to get other teams to up their bids.

Its really an American thing to hate paying taxes. Largely because people rarely see the benefits. Or more precisely, they dont fully understand the benefits.

Using a couple calculators on the internet, it looks like someone earning 50 million per year is taxed about the same in Ontario as they are in California.

All his agent will care about is his 5%.  That comes out before taxes, not after.

Brad Doolittle at ESPN predicts that the Dodgers essentially hand Yamamoto a blank check if Ohtani goes to Toronto. Passan says the same about the Mets.
