In a 9-6 win Hassell went 2-5 and is now batting .310.  Is he back in the picture?

too soon to have written him off and too soon to tell if he's back to being a major prospect (of course). Let's see the whole AFL season. That'd be like a good month or two at AA.

All singles. .643 OPS.

It's good that he's making contact but at this point the biggest concern going forward for me is pop. He has to get stronger. Hopefully it's already begun, but he'll need to hit it hard after the AFL to get stronger. I think that was the biggest issue with the hamate injury last off season. It limited his ability yo get stronger and bulk up a bit.

I agree that the hamate could be the issue. I can’t recall how much Zims production fell off after his surgery. Let’s hope that he is still a prospect.

I'm not sure of that either. But generally speaking, power takes longer to come back. For a prospect that had questionable power to begin with, it's an even bigger issue.

Hopefully some extra strength turns ground outs into singles. Singles into doubles. Doubles into a couple extra bombs. I dont think Hassell is ever going to he a big power guy but he definitely needs to get stronger to impact the ball better. He is still lean, and won't turn 23 until August. There's still hope. I think this is a very important off season for him though.

Didn't realize that. I thought it might be on par with the cream of the AA pitchers.

it's part of care for the arms of the best prospects. There are just 2 MLB pipeline top 100 prospect pitchers in the AFL. Innings limits, also wanting your own med staff supervising their care. Hitters tend to be a lot better than the pitchers in Arizona. You'll get some that are there to get extra work, like Ward, who is still seen as having potential. You also get guys teams aren't sure about whether they will keep them on their 40 man roster or perhaps are showcasing. That's probably Holden Powell. Every team sends some roster filler non-prospects. I could be wrong, but Ribalta and Sinclair are those for the Nats.

Pineda is going to find a job with someone. May be exposed to Rule 5 if the Nats decide 3 is enough company, but that bat will play and I don't think his D is pathetic.

The only way this works out would be if the Nats decide these guys pick up second positions and open up the DH slot. IT would look like a go cheap move, but it might make sense with Morales and House on the way.

last night's report from nationalsprospects.com:
Quote
Trey Lipscomb was the sole National to appear in the game. He played shortstop and registered six assists, including a 6-B-3 double play. At the plate, he was 1-for-4 with a stolen base and two strikeouts.

Last night, thinking ‘bout last night….

Quote
DJ Herz’s third AFL start was much like his first, as the 22-y.o. gave up a run on a homer, walked four, and struck out nine over four innings. He threw 79 pitches, 42 for strikes.

Israel Pineda got the start behind the plate and allowed two stolen bases in three attempts while allowing his third passed ball of the fall. At the plate, he batted third and was 1-for-3 with a run, a walk, and an RBI.

Robert Hassell shifted to centerfield and had two putouts, but the Scorpions’ No. 9 hitter made five outs in five trips to the plate, including a strikeout.

!0/19

Lost 0-5

Lipscomb 0-3   .175

Hassell     0-2  .267

I was thinking that Lipscomb would be the first player brought up to the bigs but it doesn't look good.

Checking in on the AFL:

The good:
Hassell - .273 / .338 / .348 (well, still no power) in 55 ABs, 1HR, 4SBs
Ward: 12 IP, 3.00 / 0.92, 13Ks, 5BBs (1 start, 3 relief appearances)
Herz: 15 IP, 4.20 / .133, 22Ks, 8BBs (4 starts)
Ribalta: 6.1 IP 2.84 / 1.42, 5Ks, 6BBs

The bad:
Lipscomb: .206 / .206 / .238 in 63 ABs playing all over the IF

The ugly:
Pineda: .191 / .235 / .362 (gotta think he's a DFA candidate if they want to open his spot on the 40-man)

.686 OPS for Hassell is not good. He’s looking more and more like a bust.

If someone was going to be a total turd from that trade you'd pick Hassell every time. His ceiling was already pretty meh. Wood, Gore and Abrams all being good MLB players would make it a home run deal.

At the time I thought two do the four making it would be great.

does seem that they've named the players yet. I'd hope Herz makes it.

I'm disappointed, but Pineda looks like a no brainer to be dropped from the 40 man roster if space is needed. no way he gets taken and kept on an MLB roster all year.
