2023 Arizona Fall League

I'll be curious who among the hot prospects at AA get sent to the AFL. I think you have to be AA or higher for a regular assignment. below that, I think you are limited to 1 or 2 games a week.

I think those were the older rules. Now, anyone can be sent there.

I could see Herz go. He hit 95 innings last year, is at 88 this year. He'll get a few more but nothing that would make pitching in the AFL a concern though.

Crews and Morales I think will be done. First taste of pro ball, topping 100 games, crossing 3/4 levels. They have had a pretty full year. I would say Pinckney fits that bill too, but he is almost 23. I could see pushing him a bit more just to see how he handles things.

The one I want to see is Jake Bennett. The way he was going, he was pushing for a shot in the rotation next year. He needs to get rhe missed innings in, even if just to continue the development and not have a major need for am innings limit next year.

I could see some combination of guys like Wood, Hassell, House, Lipscomb go. Hassell didn't really get a shot last year because of the injury. I wouldve thought Wood was a prime candidate but maybe they want to work on him in instructs and cages instead of more game work. Lipscomb just to see if he keeps hitting. He'll be 24 next year, might as well push him. House has sat quite regularly this year I've noticed. Whether thats be design because of the injury last year or what, but hes played 40 games than Wood this year, without a DL stay. I could see getting him more AB's. Maybe they challenge DeLaRosa to see if he can regain some momentum after struggles in Wilmington.

I think we need to send  4 pitchers so it'll be interesting to see who they send there.

Split this into an AFL thread out of the Morales thread.

I’d think Lile is a lock to go to the AFL.

I could see Lile go, but I'd think DeLaRosa would go first. Just need to see more of what hes got IMO. Lile missed a year so he definitely has some catching up to do. But, he's played in 106 games after a year off. That's a long season. But he could also use the pushing in the AFL to hopefully be done with Wilmington and moved on to Harrisburg despite mediocre numbers. So I see both sides of it.

if it is 4 pitchers, and you have Bennett and Herz, then maybe some slots go to relievers that have been light on work or that they have to make a decision about. Perhaps somebody like Holden Powell, who is finally getting work this year but who has been injured and lightly pitched up to this season. He's had < 50 innings since being drafted, with about 30 this year. Just got bumped to AA. You could hide him in the instructional league, and I don't see him getting selected in the MLB phase of rule 5, so an AFL assignment would be mostly for development / challenge / make up for lost time. He won't get many innings in in AA the rest of the year. Evan Lee could be another name just to fill out the roster.

with powell, pineda, and ward, it's looks like it is to make up for lost time. With Hassell, I'll be curious whether some of the hitting progress he showed late in the year continues.

Guessing this is a last gasp for Pineda as he hasn't done much this year. Agree about Hassell, he was on fire the last couple of weeks at Harrisburg.

I'm interested to see how Herz does and if he too can keep up his stellar last few weeks.

I think it has been just the all star and a playoff game or two.

I like Pineda. It's been a lost year with injuries. He's been passed by Millas, and I doubt they will keep 4 catchers on the 40 man roster, but I think he'll have a better career than Adams.

AFL Roster for YOUR Scottsdale Scorpions:

https://www.mlb.com/arizona-fall-league/roster/scottsdale

Looks like 8 infielders and only 4 outfielders. Should see lots of Hassell.

This is great. I wonder if you have to pay for the service to watch them? This stuff ought to be free to tempt people to buy the service for the season.  8)
