There is no freaking way.

The only way is if they used the team as some sort of leverage for their failing real estate empire

“ They are hoping to increase attendance and win games to bring the fans back to the ballpark.”

Could have fooled me. Also hilarious that they think a team can sell a 20% stake at a full valuation. The selling price is based on rich guys wanting to control a team. No one is paying that valuation to be a silent partner

https://www.talknats.com/2025/04/30/the-nats-are-sinking-in-debt-per-reports/

says the Nats are carrying the 2nd highest debt load of any team, and have the 4th lowest revenues.
Theres probably some context to that revenue number, but MASN and no park sponsor probably much to blame. Game prices are brutal even by MLB standards.

Bullcrap...they're hoping to increase revenue.  Period.  They don't give a crap about winning as long as they can make the dollars work...

MLB should force a sale of the team...their mismanagement of the franchise is nothing short of fraud...

Kind of skeptical about the revenue ranking.  They’ve generally been middle of the road attendance wise and prices are high.  Also didn’t they just get a bunch of back payments from MASN.  No reporting of what year or year they are talking about here.

Not sure of accuracy.  This looks like it’s has them tied for ninth from bottom in revenue.

The cnbc listing on which the article is based used net revenue, which is less revenue sharing paid out.

They've generated 350+ million in revenue the last three seasons. If they aren't profitable, it's because they're running a scam.

WTF are they spending the money on?

They spent 106 million on payroll last year. Where is the other 200+ million?

Well
Don’t forget they owe deferral money.  This year it’s $25 million to Scherzer and Corbin. Last year was Scherzer and I think some others.

Not sure how much the revenue sharing payment is but it’s not zero.  In the chart I posted they have one of the lower payroll to gross revenue ratios.  Not counting deferrals and revenue sharing payments.  Also the debt payments mentioned in the first article.  It’s clear they don’t want to spend on payroll now.

Aren't they paying Strasburg still, too?  Does that ever end?

He gets $23.6m this year and next, and then $80m of planned deferrals over the period beginning in '27 and ending in '29.  But the current salary is included in gross payroll figures.  Even with Stras there is no way they are losing money.

That 106 includes the deferred money from last year

It's not too tough to figure: they have massive debt service for a club that's paying into revenue sharing. On that CNBC list, the Os have higher revenue because they are a revenue sharing recipient with the same broadcast deal as the Nats. I don't think Rubinstein loaded the team with debt when he bought it, unlike real estate guys who always are mostly debt financed. Does Carlyle operate with mostly borrowed money / LBOs or do they raise a lot of equity in their deals?

I'm guessing debt payments and stadium repairs & maintenance & utilities?  The net profit goes into cheap Mark's pockets, of course.

I think its hilarious we've reached the point of making excuses for Mark. Instead of him being a cheap owner he's just a down on his luck billionaire. Got it lol.

The day Rizzo, Davey, and ownership are gone will be a day worth celebrating with champagne and ski goggles. It’ll be the second best day in this team’s history behind winning the World Series.

Until Mark hires cheaper GM and manager.

Sorry, you won't get a better GM than Rizzo with this ownership group.

He included ownership in his statement of who should be leaving.

Yes it will be.

Although we might lose the comedy of the South Capitol St dysfunction these fools have created.
