When a player breaks an unbreakable record, set by the previous greatest player of all-time, he, uh, takes over that spot. Wayne scored a million goals against guys who didn't know how to skate backwards and Alex is scoring 900+ against guys Zdeno Chara.

Discussion for another thread, of course, but I know I'm right.

The Unbreakable record isn't the goals, it's the points. And that's not even including Orr...

I wouldn't even be positive that he gets the goals record.

When someone doubts the greatness of the GOAT but you don't care because he is, in fact, the GOAT

If the estimated value is $2 billion, $750 million in debt and deferred compensation seems rather large. If Soto had said yes, that's over half the value of the franchise in either debt or future obligations

They paid less than $500 million, and have about $500 million in debt not counting player deferrels.  That's not odd, since they obviously didn't pay cash for the team.  The fact that they owe a total of $750 million on something that's worth $2 billion means they turned minimal cash/personal outlays into a billion and a quarter bucks in profit.  Nice leveraging there.

So if this deal goes through, Chief has to combine The Clubhouse with the Politics section :)

Agreed.  I used to think he was decent, but I'll never forgive spray-tan Ted for dicking Trotz out of town and denying us a chance of a repeat.

This crap show is the Lerners fault. They won their championship, I will forever be appreciative, they stopped caring.

Sell the freaking team and go be super rich in a field where people won’t be angry for you short thrifting the product.

I think the MUCH more relevant question is, will the Lerners take deferred money?

'This sale will be paid for in a ten year deal, payable over the next twenty years.'

D.C. United owners discussed deal for MLB’s Nationals

D.C. United’s ownership group engaged in preliminary conversations with a firm handling the potential sale of Major League Baseball’s Washington Nationals, multiple sources confirmed to The Athletic.

In April, it was reported that the family of local real estate magnate Ted Lerner, who have owned the Nationals since 2006, hired New York-based investment bank Allen & Company to research potential buyers for the club. The Lerners purchased the Nationals for $450 million in 2006. Forbes valued the team at $2 billion in March.

United’s ownership group, led by D.C.-area businessperson Jason Levien and former investment banker Stephen Kaplan, explored the idea of a potential purchase but withdrew their interest earlier this month. In addition to their stake in United, the two own roughly 70 percent of English championship side Swansea City. United recently sold a minority stake in the club to rapper Yo Gotti at a $730 million valuation.

Audi Field, United’s home stadium, sits just down South Capitol street from Nationals Park. A potential purchase could’ve allowed United, which already has plans for a mixed use development on the land adjacent to its own stadium, to control a large swath of land in the city’s southwest quadrant.

Though United’s ownership quickly decided against the idea of purchasing the Nationals outright, they remain interested in ownership of a portion of the club, said sources familiar with United’s front office operations.

Who is in position to know about the United's interest and benefits from feeding this to the Athletic.

I don't follow DC United as much as I used to, but everything I have ever seen from them is a mess. They got a stadium from the city, but the results have been bad and it doesn't seem to be getting better.

I don't like that idea.

it is a really nice stadium though. I've only been there for XFL games.

The Nationals have 3 players whose salaries are higher than the entire DC United team ($10.3 million total salary in 2021).  DC United is near the bottom of the league in salaries and their owners are cheap as crap.  They promised to complete the roof on the west side of the stadium and never do.  No way do we want them anywhere near the Nats (not that they could).

The Nats are pinching pennies, no tee shirt toss during the seventh inning stretch. The "cooler" bags they handed out look great, but they are paper thin, no insulation.

The big new sponsor for this season, Terra, has had their crypto coin value drop from $30.05 to $.05 in the 43 hours since the @Nationals Twitter account promoted them with a Crypto 101 video. A 98.834% drop in value. I can imagine the 2022 version of Jordan Belfort pitching Mark Lerner.

Reminds me of the  story behind naming the current NE Patriots stadium. The original name was "CMGI Field."  CMGI was an internet holding company whose stock went from the 300s to about $2 when the internet bubble burst around 2001.  It eventually ended up that the only thing of value that they held was the naming rights to the new stadium, which was sold to Gilette. NE Revolution souvenirs from the summer of 2002 when the Revs played there in sort of the soft opening season before the Pats, they have "CMGI Field" and not "Gillette" on them.  I may still have a soda cup.

Apologies to the small number of people who watched that video and thought, "I'm in!"

Coming next season: Chevron park at Exxon Field, with the Aramco Presidential section behind home plate. :-)
