Pride. It's been hurting all year for anyone putting on that uniform.

The Washington Nationals are calling up top prospect C.J. Abrams, one of the main returns in the Juan Soto trade, sources tell ESPN.

Abrams, a 21-year-old shortstop, debuted with the Padres earlier this year. Infielder Luis García is headed to the IL to make room on the roster.

Glad we can get him nice and rehabbed before he signs somewhere else next year and presumably bounces back big time.

Boy that has been a bad contract, I don't blame Rizzo and Co. too much for that one, it made sense, but what a disaster.

Voit had back tightness yesterday, doesn't sound serious as he was available to pinch hit.

Cole Henry to have Thoracic Outlet Surgery. Expected to return for Spring Training. Seems optimistic to me.

Garcia to rehab in Rochester. Fedde back and starting on Tuesday. For some reason Abbott goes to the bullpen.

Zuck notes:
Quote
Mackenzie Gore is now throwing from 120 feet as the left-hander builds his arm back up after dealing with elbow inflammation prior to his trade from the Padres to the Nats. Martinez said Gore is on track to start throwing off a mound when the team gets back home at the end of the week. The club is hoping he can make at least a few September starts once he’s deemed healthy.

Keibert today:

Quote
Sept. 8: C Keibert Ruiz taken to hospital as a precaution
Ruiz was hit with a foul ball behind the plate and exited after the second inning of Thursday's win over the Cardinals in St. Louis to go to a nearby hospital because his testicles were swollen, manager Dave Martinez said following the game. The Nationals were holding the team bus before their departure for Philadelphia so Ruiz could get checked out. “If everything turns out to be OK, I want to take him with us. I don’t want to leave him here,” said Martinez.

Ouch.  That would be cruel to leave someone in St. Louis.

The Nationals will place catcher Keibert Ruiz on the 10-day injured list Friday and select the contract of fellow catcher Israel Pineda from Triple-A Rochester, as first reported by TalkNats (Twitter links). They’ll also recall righty Jordan Weems from Rochester. The team hasn’t formally announced the moves, though Pineda’s reps at PNY Sports have announced his promotion to the big leagues (Twitter link).

Ruiz was injured behind the plate yesterday when he took a foul ball off his groin. While he initially remained in the game for a few innings, he was eventually lifted and replaced by Riley Adams. Manager Dave Martinez told reporters after the game that Ruiz was headed to a hospital for further evaluation due to swelling in his testicles.

will be interesting to see the corresponding move to make room for Weems.

Maybe they release McGee? I know that breaks the Unwritten Rule that a team must always have one southpaw reliever, but McGee is terrible.

they need a 40 man slot for Pineda, so somebody is getting released or a trip to the 60 IL.  the only guys they have on the 10/15 day IL are Cavalli and Arano, so I don't suspect either of those guys are going to the 60 day. Maybe if they are assumed to be done for the year.

Interesting also that they are unwilling to just roll with 2 catchers, Adams and Barrera.  I suppose that they had planned on adding Pineda in the off-season, so doing it now doesn't mess much up, but they haven't been using Barrera at all so I don't know why 3 catchers.

From the Post:

Quote
What did Cade Cavalli do Wednesday and what does it mean for the rest of this season? Cavalli played catch on the field after consulting with doctors and the medical staff. Martinez said the inflammation in his shoulder is gone and ideally he wants him to throw off a mound before the team heads home for the offseason. But it’s unlikely that mound will be in a game this season — Martinez said the team would proceed with caution. Instead, Martinez is aiming for Cavalli to throw a few innings in a simulated game or in a bullpen session.

Corbin out with back spasms. I wonder if Gore takes his next start.
