I didn't notice. He was dressed in a white open colored shirt, dark slacks .... standard supervisory night shift attire. African American ... 45 ish; salt/pepper beard. I had my Steelers hat on. Near the end of our baseball chat, he mentioned the Steelers. I sez, "Oh you had to go there." We laughed and I was on my way. I was holdin' up traffic.

Weird that we would expect a team that had previously won 4 of the last 6 division titles to have a grasp of the fundamentals

Fundamentals only became important this season. You could win without them in previous seasons.

Fundamentals only get noticed when you don't do them. When a team does the fundamental things, most people don't notice. When they don't, people notice.

Fundamentals aren't something you just learn and then you know them. You have to work on, practice, and drill fundamentals constantly or you lose them.

And I believe that's what at issue here, they did not sufficiently work on fundamentals. Or as Martinez calls them "the little things". And I do not think we should take it on faith that he'll make them a priority next season just because he says so. If he didn't work on them, he apparently didn't believe they're important. If he didn't believe they're important, he should not be managing.

PowerBoater was on this cat from the jump. It took me until spring training to see Zimm MIA, and then reading Boswell basically saying this was most fundamentally loose team he has seen, to get on my radar. I soon realized he was nothing more than a cheerleader. Once he hit tough times, he had nothing. NOthing, except to keep everybody happy so they don't turn on him. Well that started to go sideways too, until Rizzo had to step in and be the bad cop by shipping guys out of town. Yeeeesh.

Zimm's MIA had as much to do with Rizzo and it has to do with Davey. Rizzo allowed it, too.

I am hoping next year is better and am willing to give him this offseason to correct and learn. Firing him now 100% guarantees we hire another first-year manager who is a total unknown or a guy who is such a retread that he just took any job offered.

Wouldn't it be nice for ANY manager to have the authority to tell pitchers and speedy players, "you will learn how to bunt," or to tell dead pull hitters, "you will go the other way against the shift," etc. Or, to all batters, "you will shorten up to try to make contact with two strikes." Just day dreaming.

maybe. we'll see. im skeptical of martinez but i think there were a lot of factors this year that screwed him. i think he shares a big portion of the blame but he wasn't the one taking the hill and crapting his pants every 5th day like Gio and Roark did.

That's a heck of a good point, zero sense of self awareness, his idea of his greatest strength couldn't be further from reality. We've had a parade of managers, good and bad, and never had a prima dona skip spring training, or a pitcher slam down his glove and glare at the manager, or the GM have to step in and remove players from the team. Martinez sits there with his scented candles burning saying "this is fine".

I think Davey did improve as the season went on. I agree with Boswell that he shouldn't have been hired in the first place, but he shouldn't be fired after one season. That said, Showalter is out in Baltimore and Scosia is out in Anaheim. Either of those guys would be an excellent manager to handle the Nats in a transition year, with 2019 will certainly be.

By most accounts he was fed up with the players of today when he quit the Phillies in 2015. He has not gone back into coaching since then. I don't think he is interested.

Harper is gone. Perhaps Ryno will succeed Madden and do that in Chicago.

I issued a "mea cupla" several weeks ago admitting I was wrong about my assrssment that DM was the best choice between Cora , Kapler, Boone Gardenshire et al when I endorsed DM for manager when the selection process was started. I'm curious who you would have preferred besides Rusty as it was already a given that Cora was going to the Sox and Giaradi was taking a year off.?
