Davey was a terrible hire, but is just a passenger right now, just as all of us are. He needs to stop saying, "It will turn around" every night. He's killing me with that.
Unless DM paid for the camels out of his pocket Rizzo had to sign off on it. A hokey move........yes but not indictitive of anything else.
There were 7 managerial openings during the off season. There were four rookies hired. Did anyone think that the Nats hired the least competent one before ST?
Hate this hire. Baker was respected in the clubhouse, no one is going to give a crap about nobody Dave Martinez. Good luck to him trying to manage guys like Harper, Scherzer, and Strasburg. The Nats might still win the East if everyone else still stinks, but doubtful they win 90 games.Hopefully his contract is just two years.
Uh, two of those who are gone are by his choice. One had 29 saves last year. You know, the one he let go on a vendetta about a leak on how things are in the Clubhouse? A leak to a guy he has never spoken to, or texted, or emailed? Really nice example Rizzo made of him. Bound to help instill confidence in the rest of the bullpen too.
Rizzo dumped Kintzler and Kelley to protect dave. A GM has to defend the manager during the season. Here's hoping the Lerners let Rizzo fire dave on October 1.
At the time I thought it was a bold move. Now it's clear it was just vindictive and uninformed. I mean, there's evidence that the two of them jumped in on an interview that Scherzer was doing and whined about being NL relief pitchers, but if that was the extent of their sins, well, you sit them down in your office and read them the riot act.
Chelsea Janes@chelsea_janesMartinez on Solis and the bullpen: “I don’t know what else to do.”
Once you tell the media, "I don't know what else to do," you're cooked.
"I don't know what else to do," Martinez said when asked specifically about Solís, against whom left-handed batters are hitting .286. "He's gotta get lefties out. I put him up against lefties. I know it's not easy, but that's his job, and he hasn't been able to do that."
Janes quote seems a bit out of context, Zuck has the whole quote:
Uh. Walk carpenter?
Circle of Trust, golfing on the practice field, home run trot practice, clubhouse DJs, and playing dress up on the Miami road trip were all Martinez. He's like a walking Disney movie where the kids are in charge and everyone laughs and learns a lesson why that's not a good idea.
It's irresponsible to cherry pick that quote like that.
Do you honestly think that he thought those up on his own? Joe Maddon was infamous for things like that.
From the perspective of the Nats that was all Martinez, he brought that here.
If bringing camels and DJs into the clubhouse casued Tanner Roark and Bryce Harper to play like trash for half a season, perhaps we should re-think those players.
It's fine if there are Martinez supporters or "it's not his fault." But, what has he shown since he's been here that, if given another opportunity, we'd be better? That he'd take the talent to the next level.
My counter-argument is that no one else has taken the talent to the next level. Hasn't been here a full season, and we already have people wanting him fired because of camels and DJs. Here's what happens if you fire Martinez: The Washington Nationals will never get a decent manager for all of the Lerners and Rizzo's tenure here. They will now have a reputation that will weigh on every potential candidate's mind. We will simply get the people who couldn't get a job anywhere else.
