Yeah, no way SD has that kind of money left. I think the Sox are the only ones who are still holding money bags. He clearly doesn't want to go to Philly or he would have signed by now. He might reconsider, I guess.

They're at 110M with Machado. 140M should be doable. It's an MLB franchise, even if it hasn't spent like one in quite some time.

Especially when Machado out-hits him night after night.

If it's a larger contract, why not? Biggest contract is still biggest contract. Now, if your argument is he won't want to be directly compared to the second largest sports contract in history because he plays on the same field every game, that's got merit.

But do they want to to tie up $60/year in two players? And Hosmer I think is around $20M/year.

Oh it's an insane amount to tie up in two players but when the rest of your payroll is really low and you're counting on a bunch of young, cost controlled players to give you a six year window that coincides with the good years on those big contracts? It's a gamble someone would take. Dunno if the Padres GM/Owners are those someones, but it's at least reasonable to be looking at several very competitive seasons in a row.

And then absolutely screws you if any of those young players are good enough to be worth re-signing.  You end up losing young, good players because you're choking on $80 million in defensive liabilities with declining offense.    Maybe you figure that it's a problem you'll deal with if you're lucky enough to have it, but it's not like guys stay on minimum salaries for six years.  Especially if they go super two they become relatively big earners quickly.  For example, Rendon can't become a free agent yet but he's still making nearly $20 million this season.  Harper averaged over $17.5 million the last two years.  Even Roark is at $10 million on his final year of arbitration, which is a large part of why he got shipped out.

Padres also don't have a rotation, and their pitchers are relatively farther away from contributing in the majors. Also, TINSTAAPP. They'd be spending $105 million a year on Harper, Machado, Myers, and Hosmer, their young position players would be getting expensive by the time their young pitchers came up, AND they'd probably be relying on pitching prospects to mostly hit because buying free agent pitching would probably put them up above $200 million in salaries by 2022 or so.

I guess basically what I'm saying is that if they signed both, they'd be making like the Marlins/Rangers and trying to trade those contracts away before they ever became competitive.

Also, they are still run by AJ Preller, so they will do whatever manages to screw it up in an incredibly expensive way that is simultaneously hideous on the field.

Wouldn't you say the same for San Diego?  Yet Machado got that deal.  Says to me Harper's market value is less than Machado's.

Until Machado mouthed off about hustle and failed to hit big-time in the clutch for LA, I always considered him the more valued player. Although, I always wondered how much of his great offensive numbers could be attributed to Camden Yards.

Yeah, I have not heard anyone mention that possibility. If he has to take less money than he wanted he might as well come back here and say he gave the Nats the home team discount. Instant God status in DC.

I have felt from the beginning that signing Bryce is a legacy statement for Ted Lerner.  Is he really going to let an iconic player leave DC over money?  My gut says no.  He's 93 and signing Bryce will have no material impact on his life or that of his family and descendants.

Every decision Ted makes is "over money".  I don't mean that he's always cheap, but he's always what he views as rational.  (Not everyone would agree it's rational to refuse to spend small change in season to improve a bullpen.)

I wonder if Bryce will look back after all this and secretly regret how it turned out. Not even like down the road, like immediately regret it.

5 months of annoyance, to completely move organizations and give up being one of the rare lifelong, jersey retirement-type players, for what? For like an extra million a year? $310 million instead of the $300 million we offered him in October?
We don't know how the Nationals offer actually was framed but I do wonder if this offseason was worth an extra 10% if that is all it turns out to be.

I'm afraid it's worth it after all.  He's going to Philadelphia.  I agree with Mitlen that indifference should be the prevailing emotion for the hard core fans.

Pressure is on Eaton to perform in 2019.  Not part time, either.  I hope he's up to the challenge.

Might wanna try the math again there.  $10 million ain't 10% of $300 million where I grew up.

The Phillies GM mentioned the money Machado signed for was too much for the Phillies. He also said there will be other free agents in the years to come. Of course he also said each free agent is different. Could it be the Phillies will hold their ground at less than the Machado signing with a look to Trout in two years. Especially after Trouts recent comments about Philly.

He’s lying one way or the other.  Either he is getting Harper or he’s not and trying to explain to the fans why when their owner said they would spend stupid money.

If Bryce signs for anything within hailing distance of that original Nats offer, sort of speaks to him not really wanting to be here.

what are the odds the Philly were hoping to drive up Harper's price on the idea that the Nationals would pay any amount to keep him, and that it would cripple the Nat over the long term.  Seems a bit far fetched.

Think it depends on the opt outs. No one said anything about opt outs in the Nats offer. If he gets one or more opt outs that’s worth something.
