This. So now they will try and make up for it by taking a really hard line. Looks like a long strike.

I wonder if they have the solidarity that they did in 1994?

You all need to spend less time arguing and more time enjoying Harper's search for a team ready to sign him for a decade.

his point was that a huge part of ortiz's legend came from his leadership and charisma and ability to feel like he is connected deeply to boston. obviously he's a really good hitter but he was a DH-only (blue saying harper's defense sucks) who is going into the hall of game in no small part because of his overall off-the-field persona. ortiz minus all of that is just a good DH, and if that's all you are getting for $30 million a year, is it worth it?

ortiz's highest salary was $16 million a year and his career OPS+ was 141 and Harper is at 139.
I don’t think Harper’s defense is that bad. I think he didn’t go after some balls last year to try and not get hurt. Strong arm although doesn’t always throw to the right base. Say the Phillies sign him. He’s a major defensive upgrade over Nick Williams. No reason to think Harper won’t be able to play OF for another 5-7 years. He may move to LF. He’s not a good CF for sure.

Saved you a click, no, long term free agent contracts aren't worth the risk.

No problem. That’s why they pay me the big bucks.

It’s interesting that Pujols shows up as the best value when that’s the one often pointed to as bad for the team.

I think the players really botched the last CBA- they gave up a lot with very little in return. Maybe having Tony Clark instead of a career labor lawyer was a bad idea

This.

It's not the owners fault the veteran players stupidly (and greedily) allow the arbitration system to continue. By the time these guys reach free agency, they've usually reached their peak.

Ok.

Table is apples and oranges then. Some deals are over and some in the middle. War per dollars per year would be better.

https://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/ny-sports-madden-column-mickey-callaway-mets-20190215-story.html

There may not have been any more disappointing team in baseball last year than the Washington Nationals, who were everybody’s choice to run away with the division and instead finished third, 82-80, under another first year manager, Dave Martinez. And like Callaway, Martinez came under a lot of criticism – specifically for his handling of the clubhouse which, according to a number of reports in mid-season, was in a state of disarray.

This is the second article from a major publication I've seen that says they finished third... Phillies went 80-82. The first one came out right at the end of the regular season and I'm guessing it was a guy being lazy and writing the article a week earlier when the Phillies were still in second.  How lazy does a writer have to be to get it wrong in February?

If one did WAR per dollars per year they would be comparable. They are all contracts.

Lack of strong internal controls as I used to opine when working!

no, this is his extension with the Cards and not his FA contract with the Angels.  The latter is the one that is one of the worst.

Rizzo notes that the offer to Harper had an expiration date because they had be able to move on, but that doesn't preclude them from still working something out.

Had the Nats gotten under the luxury tax threshold by the end of last season, I'd believe this. But I dont see the Lerners paying it now.
