I didn’t say that. I just said that he’s stoked the hype, whether it’s by design of just a byproduct of his personality. I also specifically said that he should develop his brand however he wants. I’ve got zero problem with that. I just took issue with the statement that it’s all a media concoction, when we have examples of better players than Harper who don’t have as much hype (such as Trout).
Bryce love the hype and encourages it. He’s not an innocent bystander.

Completely agree. He loves the hype, and some of us have no problem with that as long as it doesn't detract from his play on the field.

I can hope he does well somewhere else and still not like his style or want him in a Nats' uniform.

Zactly...

I edited my previous comment.    I simply don't think he's a necessary cog in this team.    It's a value thing for me.

I think that's a valid concern. I kind of agree with you actually but I'm not absolutely sure. If Robles turns out to be a star like everyone says then, yeah, letting Bryce go will seem like genius.

Remember in July when the (wrong) decision was made to keep Harper with hope that it would somehow increase the probability he would stay?  What a joke!  Time for a re-vote.

Strictly from a "wanting to win" perspective, here's why signing one player for a long term mega-deal is a bad idea -- If it's a 10-year contract, there will inevitably be at least three years where a team wants to re-tool at the very least.  In those years the long term, high cost guy becomes an albatross.  It makes a franchise much less agile.

That was the Lerners who consistently mess up when they get involved except for Scherzer. Rizzo had Bryce traded and he didnt want Weiters but both those things got nixed by ownership. Same with Bud Black being manager.

Joel Sherman says Harper wants to go the Yankees, but a more likely landing spot is with the White Sox.

Yeah Harper always wanted to be a yankee but they can smell that he’s overrated and so they are focusing on Machado who plays more premium defensive positions and isn’t quite as overrated.

Don't see this in the article but I quickly skimmed for anything new. (And I didn't find much.)

Seems like "Mr. 300 Million" has had a summer far below expectations.

Truly heart broken for him.

I've never been to Philadelphia!  What am I missing?  (don't say "cheesesteak").

Then nothing.

But if you're an American history buff, then there's that.

The whole Harper wants to go the Yankees thing is based on his childhood fascination with the team and Mantle. It's stupid.

Agreed. I think Bryce would be happy to be the face of a franchise for 20 years-he’ll never be that for the Yanks.

He’s not going to be that for the dodgers either

Nope, it’s why I still see him signing back here.

Thing is it seems like the Nats have spent that money on others (Corbin, Sanchez, etc.) so I don’t think that offer is still on the table.

The biggest trick that the owners have played on fans is convincing them that the luxury tax threshold is some sort of hard cap. The costs of going past it are relatively minimal. There is money to sign Bryce if they want. The Lerners can afford it.

These owners for sure can afford it if they really wanted, but do you think they will?

I think if he came back to that $300M/10 years offer it would be a done deal. They have not spent that money. Then there are all kinds of deferred payment deals they can make a la Scherzer.
