I'm more interested in his reaction. Will he become frustrated and lose his plate discipline, swinging wildly at pitches outside the zone? I hope not. If he maintains his discipline, his slump won't last long. If he becomes a Michael A. Taylor, then yeah, the reaction here will be harsh.

EVERY player slumps, so let's get that out of the way. Who has the makeup to continue their recent performance? Soto or MAT? Soto, 7 or 8 years younger, has displayed throughout his career FAR better plate discipline as well as superior power to MAT. At this point, it's hard to suspect MAT has permanently turned a corner and can hit well over the long haul. He reminds me of a CF version of Espinosa. He may get it together in stretches, but then he'll revert back to a K machine. MAT is a perfect 4th OF. Soto is a guy you want to keep in the lineup most every day.

I'm willing to trade streakiness for elite defense in CF. But I know not everyone feels that way.

Which is why MAT makes a great 4th OF. Start him against lefties and sit Soto or Eaton, and use him otherwise as a late pinch runner/defensive replacement.

Wow! According to MLB, no 19 year everyday MLB player has ever had an actual WAR over 5 in their rookie season except for Harper. It looks like Mel Ott's projected would have been about 5 for a full season.

After a full year or two of elite play. MLB history is chock full of guys who were fantastic early and tail off.

But I too do believe Soto is the truth.

Comparing Soto after 120 ABs to Bryce after 121 ABs as 19-year-old Major Leaguers:

Batting average: Soto .325, Harper .286
OBP: Soto .434, Harper .372
SLG: Soto .600, Harper .514
HR: Soto 8, Harper 4

There really aren't that many who were fantastic as 19-year-olds (of course, Soto has a lot of time left in this season) who then faded out. Here's the list of those who amassed a higher offensive WAR through the entire season they were 19 than Soto has at this point: Ott, Conigliaro and Harper.
