AAARRGGGHH!  I almost hate to do this, but, Bluestreak - you realize Bryce is only #30 in WAR (9.4) among position players from 2016 to date?  He's not Trout (21.3), of course.  He sure as heck isn't Mookie Betts (17.9), either.  At this point, he's not Nolan Arenado (13+).  He's been outperformed by Anthony Rendon (12.2), Manny Machado (11.8) and Brian Dozier (12.1).

It is really put up or shut up time for him.

Pretty much. He has the name value of a top 1-3 player in the league, but production-wise, he's not there. He can go around the league and ask for $400 million, but I don't see who gives it to him. Teams are smart, they know players' values.

I kind of like Scenario #1 as well.

I doubt they ever tell Zim to get packing, but Scenario 1 would work even with an interesting platoon, where Murphy, Zim, and Castro have a weird 2B/1B rotation to keep Murphy's bat in the lineup each day. Zim plays three or four times a week at 1B with Murphy at 2B, the rest of the days Castro is at 2B and Murphy at 1B.

I agree. Bryce is a very good player. Not great. He needs a good season to justify that money and I hope the Nats don’t give it to him. But I do want to see how he does with more protection. Now that Werth is gone Harper is probably my least favorite player on the team.
My reactions are basically a response to the takes that he’s Adam Dunn, or that he’s actually not productive, or selfish for hitting solo homers.

He’s not worth 400 million. But he is still quite valuable.

He's also in a spot where power is super cheap and a 29-year old lefty slugger like Matt Adams can barely get a job.

And yeah, you say but Matt Adams is a platoon-hitter with limited defense value. To which I say...

Bryce Harper (OPS vs. RHP/vs. LHP)
2016: .833/.764
2017: 1.087/.802
2018: .981/.735

2018 UZR/150: -14.9 runs
2018 DRS pace: -10 runs

Eric Hosmer got 8 years and $144 million. What does Harper get for that same 8 years. $200 mil? $240 million? I think some team might give him $300 million. Hopefully not the Nats.

I think he'll get $300 million and/or a ludicrously high AAV with very favorable opt-out terms, and possibly still both. I can't imagine him getting past Stanton, and I think Boras is smart enough to prioritize the ability to cash-in after an MVP-type season in his mid-20s over total dollars, as long as Bryce is getting $30 million plus a year.

Honestly, I think the most face-saving move for both sides is probably something like a 5-year $165 million extension with opt-outs every year after the first two years. Makes him look like he "took a discount' to stay in DC, saves him from looking stupid by floating $400 million last year, saves the Lerners from letting him walk, keeps him here while Max/Stras are still prime, and still leaves a 95% chance he'll hit the market again to get his 10-year deal in 2 years.

He's not worth $33MM/yr...

I believe #11 (my all-time favorite National) was worth more to the team in his first 7 seasons than 34 has been these past 7 seasons. 11 was a clutch, clutch player, and never had much lineup protection.

Harper was excellent in 2015. Beyond that? He's been really good but not really up to the hype.

I wouldn't even give him $200 Mil let alone $300 or more.

Right now with RISP does anyone wish Harper was up?

I only have faith in those situations in Rendon

A lot of MLB players right now are worth $33MM/year if they're willing to sign contracts covering their age 26-30 seasons. If Bryce is a 4-5-WAR player with upside, he'd be worth that to someone.

I don't really care who he roots for but dumb to show up like that.  When he does that in New York or Philly they will rip him a new one.

If it’s your hometown, you get a pass... this isn’t LeBron sporting a Yankees cap.

Yeah, didn't Rizzo show up to the Winter Classic in Blackhawks garb?  It's a non-issue.  The photo is hilarious and kinda satisfying, though.
